We are having our home carpets replaced next week and to keep costs down we are removing our old carpets and underlay ourselves so instead of taking it to the dump could it be chopped up and added to an outdoor school which already has a sand/carpet/underlay surface?

Opinions and advice much appreciated :)

I don't see why not. Actually seems pretty sensible way of reusing & recycling. How will you shred it though? Sounds like it could be a total PITA

Our livery yard has it on top of sand outside, bought chopped up. I think it has to be kept wet but don't quote me ! I find it deep but that could be the new sand. Rides lovely when wet and levelled as it's settling in. Does blow about a bit.

Our indoor has it, it needs wetting daily or else the carpet sits on top of the sand and it can get clogged between horses feet. It is a nice surface when mixed in properly with the sand.

We have it as the surface of our indoor at my yard - there might be some sand at the base but the majority of the surface is carpet. At first I was pretty sceptical - but I've been actually enjoying riding on it. It's got a lot of bounce. Only downfall (there are 2) is that it sticks to the Velcro on boots so you come out with half the school clinging to the horse's legs...and the other is that when a horse poos its nearly impossible to find it all again.

I can't imagine an easy way of chopping it easily. I'd be inclined to use it whole in muddy gateways with something laid on top to fight the dreaded clay mud
