I feed my horse haylage as he tends to drop a lot of weight over winter. I recently found out from my YO that there are additivies in last years haylage that we are feeding. My horse enjoys the haylage and eats all of it but Im concerned that i dont know what is actually in the addtivies and if this is harmful at all. Does anyone know about this ??

AS far as I am aware there is nothing added to Hayledge..... as has previously been said it's just bailed earlier, wrapped in plastic & retains a higher moisture level.

What they mean its that when it was wrapped it was sprayed with a product to make the haylage 'make better'. Improving fermentation by basically putting good bacteria in it.

We used it one year, but frankly it didn't make much difference and cost a few quid per bale.

Should not have any adverse effect on your horse, if anything its better as the good bacteria out compete the bad ones.

Here's a website if you are bored: http://www.ecosyl.co.uk/

Worth saying we made our haylage on the dry side, which is possibly why we didn't find much difference

Here's the blurb on the Ecobale product for horse haylage

The MTD/1 bacteria in ECOBALE inoculant help ensure a faster, more efficient fermentation resulting in more consistent bales, reduced losses and improved palatability. Other natural bacteria in ECOBALE help reduce the risk of moulding both during storage and after opening, extending the safe feeding period.
