I know this has been a thread before, but what I wanted to know is:

Once they have had the initial course how often do they need doing again?

If so, is it just one injection or a course of again?

Does it get injected into the joint?

Can a knowledgeable person do the injections after the first consultation?

An up to date idea of cost please?

Sorry but if I need to remortgage my house I would like to know!

I did the course of injections on my filly about 3 months ago. The course is made up of 7 Intramuscular injections (one every 7 days) and is done once a year (in normal circumstances). I injected her myself and if your vet is happy for you to do it don't worry. Have your vet talk you through the first and away you go, its not difficult and its good to have the confidence and knowledge to carry out an IM(you never know when it could be handy).
As for mortgaging the house-yes, its expensive, my course of 7 cost 300 and something euros!!!! Ive now got her on glucosamine 1,000 which I bought online.Hopefully, Adequan wont be a yearly happening and I can continue with powders if needed.

Thanks Fairynuff. I have been injecting my own horses for more years than I care to admit! So that won't be a problem. Did it work well for your filly and why on someone so young?

I got a horse that had just had his second course of Adequan when he was 18, and he was still sound when I lost him at 29. It was quite a few years ago, obviously, but the price of the course of injections was fearsome even then.

A horse at our yard had it last year, he was diagnosed with early arthritis, the adequan really helped, as said above, the owner did the injections herself and was able to claim for the adequan on her insurance, my mare is due to have it this year once we start her back in work, again under insurance, but after the 12 months from onset you wouldn't be able to claim.

My filly is in training (shes a Quarter) for reining competitions and a course of Adequan is given as a preventative to all of the youngsters. I can only presume that its helped her but boy did it hurt my bank account!! I have heard many positive stories regarding Ad so it seems that its well worth the expense. I have heard that it can cause localised swelling and soreness and my vet told me to inject her on the back of her buttock, on line with half way down her dock and to alternate with each injection. She didnt seem to notice the injection (but then Im very quick and painfree, like you, years of doing them) and had no bad reactions.
