Adhesive dressings for awkward places?

We used to use polster plast to cover awkward areas. Its a very sticky backed type of foam. Clip all surrounding hair off, apply melolin or allevyn to would and put polster plast on top. We used it post stifle arthroscopies. Its hard to get off and you need adhesive remover or something like surgical spirit. Where are you trying to cover?

I want to try using anaesthetic gel to help with my horse's reaction to needles. It seems to need 30-60 mins between application and effect and I would like to be able to cover it during that time, so it doesn't just get warm and drip off! The Polster plast sounds a bit aggressive - perhaps I will just have to try ordinary Elastoplast.

My vet gave me this http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/Animal-Polster/productinfo/POLSTERP/ to cover staples on the face to keep it clean so I could turnout. It stuck really well straight on the hair with a dressing on the bit where the staples were so it didn't stick to those. It stayed on really well and I found it easy enough to ease off (maybe because I was sticking it to hair not clipped out skin) but it left a sticky residue on the hair which wasn't a problem just cosmetic.

That is polster plast as I described. Its even in the same packaging as it was when I was using it 10 years ago.

I remember horse plasters coming out about 18 or 20 years ago. I had a free sample but I can't say I've ever seen them for sale since. A shame really as there all those odd places on legs that you can't bandage.

I've had a horse that the vet used adhesive allevyn and another used a adhesive primapore (both like plasters) with a special kruuse adhesive spray that made the dressings stick extremely well. Highly recommended!!

If it's for a short time like that get some opsite or tegaderm film dressings. For the anaesthetic cream to work it needs to be a properly occlusive dressing like that. To get it to work well you may need to take the hair off.

Wouldn't pile cream be a good alternative? The "magic jelly" the dentist gives us neede-phobics works in just a couple of minutes, so I don't know what the veterinary stuff is made of if its that slow.

Perhaps it's because the mouth epithelium is so thin that the jelly acts quickly? Have spoken to both vet and chemist and they both said lidocaine and 40-60mins.
Will check out the dressings suggestions - thank you. She is fine with the clippers, so if a bald patch is the price we have to pay for calm vaccination I'll be happy!
