Hello all!

Just as per title really, which jump saddles would you recommend with the adjustable gullet system? i've already got a wintec gp for the babies but i could do with a jump saddle before my girl starts jumping me out the saddle!

Thanks very much :)

I've got a bates jump saddle, which has been great whilst my boys are growing, just contemplating getting a more 'grown up' saddle now!

Which ever fits! I know that may sound unhlepful but all brands, and even models, fit differently, as well as adjusting in different ways. Not all horses will fit ANY adjustable saddle. Of Wintec and Thorowgood I prefer the TG shaped tree, the Wintec has a kink in the arms which means it puts just a smidge of extra pressure at the top of the panel. I would get a trusted fitter out to see what works.

I have a Kent & Master jump saddle- pretty much a Thorowgood but in leather. Has the changeable gullets which have been changed back and forth a few times now. Not the comfiest on the bum for hacking (and I have padding! ;) ) but I find it pretty good for jumping so that's what matters. :)

I think it also depends on the shape of your horse's back and the width of the spinal processes. You need to check the width of the saddle's gullet along the whole length to the cantle. It is no good being able to widen the front if it is still going to be too narrow at the back.

Or the rear (or even front) panel is the wrong depth or the wrong shape. I see so many of these adjustable saddles where the wrong gullet width has been used in order to balance the saddle. Choose the right gullet width to match the angle of the horse's ribcage under the points, THEN see if the saddle can be balanced - many cannot.

domane/sbloom- I totally agree, mine was originally fitted by and has always been refitted/adjusted again by a qualified Master Saddler. It has been great for me being able to switch from M to MW and back again when needs be without needing a new saddle, but you are right that the saddle wouldn't be a "one fits all". The K&M has quite a wide panel/gullet compared to the Wintec (I am told by saddler!).

I have pessoa as my favourite but you can't adjust it yourself, and also bates caprilli which are nice and you can adjust, very similar to pessoa, but I have to say if I would trade the bates for a pessoa!

Dare I mention Wow, which are adjustable in more ways than just gullet (headplate)?
I had a genesis GP for popping over little jumps on my baby neddy (who had never really put a foot wrong) and a saddler decided that her MW gullet was wrong as the saddle was downhill (she is roach backed) so a MN was duly fitted which made the saddle level, but I promptly got bronced off after a 1'6 cross pole and the saddle going halfway up her neck. Needless to say I'm neither a fan of that particular saddler, or of some adjustable gullet saddles in retrospect, mainly because tree profiles and gullet widths at the back of the saddle aren't a one size fits all.
