Hi all

Does anyone know makes of adjustable gullet, leather saddles? I know there are Kent and masters (hard to come by second hand!) and bates saddles which are adjustable. But are there any other makes that I don't know about? Must be leather, could be within a pony range....

I know you will know the answers!

Thank you :)

Ive just purchased a GFS leather saddle exc which had an interchangable
gullet system .

Very nice and comfortable ..think they retail at about £900 ,but i managed to find one which had been used a few times and got it for £620

i looked at the kent and masters ones and didnt like the quality of the panel under the saddle flap

good luck with your search

I believe (but Sbloom may tell me i'm wrong!) that my Native Pony Saddle is adjustable? She certainly adjusts it for me!

Ah brilliant thank you! I though there must be others that did adjustable gullet but didn't know te names of them. The search continues...thank you

Thanks Ella :D - our saddles aren't adjustable in the way that most people think it means - they are usually looking for a changeable headplate. And I will say to the OP just be sure the saddle fits - just because you can change the width doesn't mean they fit everything:

A bench made (ie not production line) leather saddle on a traditional beech laminate tree gives you way more choice of tree, there are hundreds of laminate trees compared to tens of synthetics (and it's why most specialist saddles are on laminate trees) plus you can specify different panel shapes and depths to go with those trees - way more choice overall.

But if an adjustable model truly fits then go for it!

What sort of saddle? GP, jump, dressage?

Eric Thomas do adjustable gullet in leather, have just sold my jump one. There's a company on ebay that do them for £900 buy it now but every couple of weeks will start them on an auction for £595 (most go for that too ;))

Collegiate and Pessoa also do changable gullets.

I bought a new Kieffer a couple of months ago as they have fully adjustable gullets which I need for my ever expanding neddy.
I researched quite a few different brands but settled on the Kieffer as I found them to be better finished and an overall better quality saddle (in my opinion) and importantly they offer good customer service both pre and post sale.
I dealt with Kieffer direct as I wanted long girth points (I.e. dressage length girth points) fitted to the Frankfurt AP saddle. They did it for no extra charge and it even ended up being less expensive than buying from one of their UK suppliers, although it did cost a bit; £1650 including the matching stirrup leathers.
The most comfortable saddle I've ever ridden in as it has a soft, almost shock absorbing seat and a flexible tree so moves with my big lump of a horse.
Love it and extremely happy with every aspect of it.

Kieffer and other brands like Passier are adjustable but only by a fitting agent, usually with some kind of heating device to soften the plastic. Removable gullets are owner-adjustable, there are also saddles that are designed to be owner adjusted in different ways - treeless, Balance International, flexi panel saddles for instance, though most are best off being professionally fitted and owner fitted with guidance. Then there are traditional beech laminate trees which some fitters (such as me) will adjust in a press - they can be adjusted a handful of times and on average will narrow about one size and widen about two sizes. Not all fitters will adjust trees in this way and most fitters who do alter them will only do it for a saddle they sold - it's far too expensive if you break one to risk it on anything else!

Do they ever have those saddles in 16.5 the Eric Thomas ones? So hard finding exactly what you want !
