adopting/re-homing from a shelter/charity - experiences?

I'm going to see him a couple of times before I bring him home. :smile3:
I can't see him until Friday though so I'll have time to get everything in for him.
I've still got a bit of fencing to fix before they come tomorrow afternoon - I'm having visions of it not being finished and them saying I can't have him. :eek3:

Early start tomorrow to get the last bit of chicken wire fixed to the bottom of the fence and buried before going to do the horses.
Wish me luck :tongue3:

What a really lovely face, I can see why you couldn't resist him :) :) Best of luck with everything (although I'm sure it will be fine) and it won't be long before Lubo comes home to you :)

thanks guys :smile3:
they're due anytime between now and four - eek!
I've spent something like 6 hours sorting my fencing and put down 8 bags of dirt to cover the chicken wire.
I'll be annoyed if I don't pass the home check.

He is absolutely gorgeous, what a lovely face. He looks interested and willing, you can't go wrong. Hope home check OK.

The guy was literally in the house for 5 minutes.
He said that the height of one of my fences could be a problem (it's 3ft) but I put it down on the form on my first visit before they matched me with Lubo so hopefully it won't be an issue.

That said, I haven't been particularly impressed with the shelter - one person would say something was ok and then another would say it wasn't. :cool3:
All I can do now is wait - he said they'll phone me if the fencing is an issue.

And they wonder why so many dogs are still sat in shelters and cats in catterys when there are perfect homes waiting right there for them!!! makes me so angry :( They're quite happy to take your money and make the sob story and then suddenly unless you pretty much build your house and garden to their damn specifications you can't give a loving home!!! ARGh. makes me angry.

blood_magik, he's absolutely gorgeous, have everything crossed for you (and him) that you can take him home. Can't wait to hear an update that you have him! xx

well if it is an issue surely you just fix it? I probably would fix it anyway as 3 ft fence and dogs is an easy escape route, just to avoid any hassle!

fixing it is an option but it's wether I would be able to fix it as quickly as they would like. I just about managed to put the chicken wire up by myself. :o

I would have hoped that they would've said something before now if it was going to be a problem seeing as they've known about it from day one.
Anyways, there's nothing I can do now until they come back to me.

That is a seriously cute face ! Fingers crossed for you and Lubo I do hope all goes well. Sounds a really picky shelter,as another poster said - no wonder there are so many poor dogs in shelters. keep us up to date.

Congratulations! Sorry didn't come back to this thread until today, so I didn't pm you the shelter but it was a breed-specific one and the dog we were interested in is still in kennels according to their website, so how that is preferable to our obviously less than perfect home I don't know, but have given up. We have experience of the breed but one of our dogs is elderly so maybe they thought a new (but not young) dog would be too much for him, although the aged lab rarely leaves the sofa these days.

Interesting that your home check only took 5 minutes - the person stayed for over an hour at ours.

I should have tried another rescue centre, but a friend had a litter of puppies, and so we now have a very cute poodle cross who is gorgeous and driving me mad - he has just learnt to operate the dog flap and is in, out, in, out, and very pleased with himself.

Hope to see more photos of Lubo!

I can't wait :biggrin3:
going shopping to get him a bed and collar/lead etc. Already ordered the guard for my case so it will be here in time for me going to pick him up.
He's going to be spoiled rotten - parents have said I can bring him with me when I go to theirs so he'll get to play in their massive garden.
Most important thing now is to sort insurance and a tag for his collar.

Any words of wisdom? I'm going to put a baby gate at the bottom of the stairs for the first few weeks so that any accidents are contained to the hard flooring downstairs and im going to put a routine in place to help him settle in.
Ah, I'm so excited :tongue3:

Aww, I'm so pleased for you. Lucky Lubo! Wishing you many happy years together from me and my two rescue dogs! (and my two rescue cats, and my twelve ex-batt hens - can you tell I'm a sucker for a sad story!)

He is a lucky boy and my favourite colour combo too lol, well done for giving him a home, hope you spend many happy years together.

Rescues do vary so much, when I applied to adopt my 2 Dobes from Dobermann Welfare I had the most lovely lady come to do a home-check, we still exchange Xmas cards lol. After looking around my garden which has high hedges she said well really if a dog was determined to get out it would but everything looks fine to me.

picking him up next week :D

He's absolutely gorgeous, I can see why he stood out for you among the others :)

Hope you have lovely times together!

If you are wanting any good training classes locally, look up Glasgow Dog Trainer and Behaviour Consultant - he's really great at demystifying training and ironing out niggles, impressive guy (his blog is excellent even if you don't go to his classes).

Brilliant, thanks :smile3:

Congratulations! And you have, effectively, saved 2 dogs...your new boy and the dog who can be rescued as you have freed up a space.

So pleased for you! My dog Molly is happy too as he looks a bit like her! :D

Nice job BM. I salut you, that's great your taking him. He is the kinda of dog that gets over looked, older with a health issue but he deserves to spend his golden years being loved.

I work for the Scottish Staffie rescue and use common sense when home checking which by some of the stories I read on here a lot of the other charities don't. But then as you can imagine the Staffie rescue is over run with dogs and we can't afford to overlook any potential home for daft reasons we need as many people as we can get. We happily give dogs to people in flats too, just because you don't have a garden does not mean you can't give a dog a great home. Why other rescue aren't so sensible with there approach is beyond me.

I wish you both the best of luck and make sure you get more pics up

thanks guys :smile3:
He's such a sweet little dog. I'm going to see him tomorrow for some 'cuddle time', as the shelter calls it :tongue3: to start building up a bond with him before I bring him home.
I'm a little bit nervous now that i know he's mine but I'm sure we'll be grand once he settles and we get into a routine. :smile3:

I'm going shopping today to get all of his stuff and to dog-proof the house. Apparently he's a sock stealer. :tongue3:
