Adrian & I went to a hunter trial today! The DMG powder has made so much difference to him that he's a different horse. His last comp was Aug 2009, when his EPSM got the better of him. My last comp was dr with Trev in Aug 2011, so last night was spent trying to find all my comp clothes! Long boots, back protector, white breeches... Luckily I still had a tube of denture tablets for the white tail soak.

The last time we competed, he was in a myler combi, & yest it took me a while to figure out which way round it went as I'd forgotten. Then when he went on loan, he went with one bridle & came back with a different one, & the cheekpieces won't go short enough for the myler. So I went for a Cheltenham gag because I'd def jumped him in one for a bit, but couldn't rem if he liked it.

We hacked there, with o/h on his bike in front, & A was def pleased to be at a comp again. There was clear round sj, so we went to have a look, then went in. Had a quiet trot round, pointed him at the first jump... and he shot off. It was like a switch going off in his brain...'oh yes, I know what this is'. He remembered exactly what to do & was so very excited to be jumping again. Got a CR rosette!

Then onto the xc. The person in front pushed in by rubbing out my number, then writing theirs in small & then mine under theirs, but they fell off, so there was a loose horse careering about while we were waiting to start. A has done v little xc as it's not really my thing, so was a bit nappy away from the start, but once he understood, he was off.

V v strong once or twice & I was v grateful for the gag as he'd have been dangerous in a snaffle, and romped home clear. Both of us with big smiles! He is fab at comps cos he will jump his heart out, then chill the second he's finished, so had a quiet hack back home.

I am not sure if we came anywhere cos the schedule says not timed, & I'm not sure how you work out placings with no times, but the only thing that matters is 1) he behaved and 2) he was well & truly up for it!

So now I might start riding him a couple of times a week when his sharer isn't up. Might do a Mia K jumping clinic at the end of the month & take him to Potton when they have their next event. Might save T for dr as A doesn't really see the point of it. Whereas T is too ditzy for sj.

So, yeah! We had a fab time & I feel ***amazing***

Waiting to go xc

On xc course towards the end - best o/h's phone could do!

Thanks for reading!

There's sj at Potton next Sunday, so that's a possibility...!!

My friend has also said that I can borrow her box when she's not using it, so we might be able to get out n about occasionally.

Really need another WOW tho cos atm I'm riding him in T's WOW with a big sheepskin pad under it, which isn't ideal. Need to wait til o/h gets another job before I get too excited. Now is a v bad time financially for me to decide to start competing again.

Whats EPSM (something metabolic???).....

He looked VERY happy and glad to be out (as did you) so hope you can get out a few more times this season :D Do you know anyone who could lend you a trailer???

EPSM is a genetic problem. When the horse digests starch, the process goes a bit wrong & as a byproduct, makes something similar to lactic acid which floods the muscles so the horse always feels v stiff, as if he's done 10 hours in the gym the day before. (V simplified & probs not v accurate description, but science isn't my thing.)

It started as a v gradual reduction in performance, & he went from being a feisty, full-on showjumper (his half brother won the Hickstead Derby in 2007 & his full brother retired after the water jump in the same year) to a plod. The DMG powder appears to be reversing the decline. Before he went on loan, I tried jumping him, & he did try, but his body just couldn't do it, & he crashed thru even tiny jumps. Ditto when he came back from loan.

Today he went bananas sj, pulled my arms out xc & finished full of running... and didn't touch anything. So we're going to stay on the DMG powder & gradually get going again, & see what happens. He is only 10 or 11, so there's time.

Been a long time since I've seen one of the :D and I almost went there today!!!!

Might see you at the "bigger" one next month?

Well done glad you had a brillient day and Adrian is back on form. Looks like you could be in for a fun summer.

H'mm, I might do, Dianchi. Haven't seen you for aaaaages! I had to sell my lorry to pay for this:

Stupid house turned out to be structurally unsound as someone 2 owners ago bodged an attic conversion. So things within hacking distance are good, & Tetworth is only about 20 mins away.

Will pop up my weekends report of my training sessions when I get a few pics so you can see the ginger one back in action!

Adrian is just such a cool name for a horse and nice to finally see what he looks like. Well done on what sounds like a good day.

What a lovely post! I have followed his story throughout, well done you for sticking with him and getting this improvement :p. How nice to see you both having fun again :D

This is absolutely wonderful to read, Catembi, I am sat here with a big smile on my face! I bet you never thought you'd get him back to this, well done you for persevering with him and giving him so much time to come right!

Isabelle

Catembi you are an inspiration, I remember you trying to find out what was wrong with Adrian and what an epic that was. How wonderful for you to have had such a great day today.

Onwards and upwards, he's so lucky to have you.
