Hi,

I have recently started horse riding lessons as an adult in and I am enjoying every second in the saddle. I am keen to get as much experience with horses as possible.
I am based in Tameside, is there any advice on how I get more time and experience with horses outside of my lessons?
Thank you

I dod the TS stable management course for 8 weeks and then was allowed to volunteer and help. I also paid for lessons, one on grooming and one on tacking up/

One thing that maybe of interest is to seek out your local Endurance GB Group (either Lancs/Cheshire or West Riding), they often hold interesting non-ridden social events and once the season is underway are always glad of volunteers to help at venues and on ride days, where you may learn lots of useful information.

A couple of years back I posted on facebook asking if anyone wanted help or purely yard duties as I had had a long break from riding and having lessons I did not get the hands on experience I wanted to gain. Two years later and a rehab case, a share and a loan falling through I have made lots of connections and have a horse I can ride on a regular basis when I want, still have lessons and have a weekend yard job for a couple of hours so just be inventive and don't be afraid to ask people but know your limits :)

Find your local RDA centre (riding for the disabled). They’re always in need of keen volunteers.
That isnt so. RDA are picky about who helps. My next door neighbour owned her own horse and guided me when I learned to ride but was unable to help with RDA sessions. I seem to remember one had to go to a residential course and she couldnt leave her own kids. She was reduced to packaging charity cards instead. Things may be different now.

My RDA you do a one day course & get ticks on a card. TBH if you turn up on time and sober you're going to pass it. You need a background check too.
