Im 36 years old, started riding when I was 31 and have had various part loans over the last few years.

Ive decided that I had enough of part loaning and have a small budget of £2000 to buy my own.

Im looking for:

an allrounder
15.2hh -16.2hh
Idealy ID x TB
around 8 to 10 years old
must be able to jump and do some XC. I love jumping but still very novicy at it.
must be safe in traffic and able to hack out. Alone would be a bonus.
Suitable for an ambitious novice

Im based on The Wirral in Cheshire.

Am I asking too much for such a small budget?

Anything else I need to consider for my first horse?

honestly for 2k for a novicey rider - are you confident enough to handle something to be brought on a bit???

they are out there if you are prepared to wait and look hard..... but if you said 3k you would probably be move likely to get something nicer....

have a mooch on horsemart and see what you get for you money :)

Your wish list looks reasonable apart from you may find it difficult with the age as a lot of people will spend a lot more to have a quiet horse of only 8-10yo.

Would you consider a 12-14yo?

I just listed some on ChaseMyDreams ad that may be suitable

With your budget though I think you may need to compromise poss on age.... An 8-10 yr old that is suitable for a Novice is a true diamond and price will relfect as much!

I suppose I would consider an older horse. I was thinking of 8-10 yrs as I wanted it to be with me for many years without the age related conditions happening soon(both horse and me!).

I can stretch to £2800 and a bit more depending on how long it takes to find a horse. So, I suppose the longer I wait, the more I will save.

Im hearing that the market is good for buyers at the moment.

Yes I think it is a buyers market at the mo but I also think 3k will be a bit more realistic. We have just sold one who fits your description exactly (except he is 6yrs) and we sold him for 3k to the first person that came and there were literally people queing to see him.
So although I think it is a buyers market, horses that you are after are like gold dust and wont go cheap. Hope this helps :)

I brought my first horse for 2000 euros. I am a novice, and he is a 6 year old Selle Francais. He is perfect and I know I got a real deal with him, he has competed so jumps really well and hacks out alone. Trust me I''m nervous at going out alone so finding him and having the courage to go out alone with him is really good! Today we had tractors going past us, lorries, cars the works and he was as cool as a cucumber!!!!! Very lucky, he does have some faults mind which is why he was cheap. Has a cataract on one eye, but this doesn't bother him at all or hinder his performance. Just make sure you really look around and try them out!!!!

I've been looking for something not dissimilar to you for nearly a year. My budget is bigger, I'm open to a bigger age range and am happy to take on something that needs a bit of work (albeit it needs to be straight forward).

So you might find something...... but it may not be easy!
