Size can be very deceptive. It’s not just the height more the build / shoulder / length of rein/ front. Sometimes the only way to find out is to have a sit on. Saddle size can be helpful anything less than 16.5 would indicate a more compact rather than scopey pony. Compact isn’t always as comfy.

Indeed. But the horse in question was unbroken, so I had to use my imagination. My Highland gelding is definitely 14hh (I've measured him) and he's built like a brick sh*thouse. The moment I saw him, I thought, "Yeah, I could ride that no bother."

I showed a video of me leading the mare to a few horsey friends, and the universal reaction was, "Oh my God, she's tiny!" Not what you want to hear. I am only 5'4 and about 8.5 stone, so I don't make most horses look tiny.

My Fell is only 13.2, my old welsh pony was also 13.2 (I measured both of them or I wouldn't believe they could be the same height) but the Fell seems much bigger, I was hoping he could use the welsh ones old rugs but they don't even come close to covering his ample backside. Obviously he is much chunkier but he moves so well, not at all clumpy or heavy, unless he doesn't want to do something then it's like persuading a rhino to move.

The majority of our native breeds are on the RBST list of endangered breeds.
If only people would not write off their abilities both to carry a reasonably sized adult & to perform to a really good level.
Please always consider one.
It'll be gone in 24 hours, but here's me on Dave. He's 13hh & about as wide. I'm 5'3" & I don't know how much I weigh, but I wear a size 10.

Yes, the natives are really capable and so deserve to be more sought after imo. When I went to view my Welshie as a 2 y/o I could instantly see that with her build and conformation, whether she remained under 15hh (as she was then) or got over that, she would absolutely be able to carry me at 5'6 and erm...11 stone something! She and my senior horse are now the same handy height of 15.3 yet my older chap, being largely Arab in his breeding feels loads smaller. Both take up the leg well but width across the body as well as in depth makes a huge difference to how a horse rides and how good you feel about that aspect of things. It isn't great to feel underhorsed but a decent native isn't at all likely to have that result.

I rode a 13h Icelandic for over 20 years and although he did always feel small as there wasn't much in front of me, he never considered himself small. I'd previously had Fell ponies which were a couple of inches bigger but with bigger shoulders. That said he was the toughest of beasts, untiring and never a days illness and rarely a days lameness (always from fighting?) until he injured a check ligament slipping in the field at 28. He thrived on work and when we did multi day rides like the Mary Townley Loop, each day he was keener and raring to go. Fab little horse!

I never would have gone for anything under 13.2 but I’m a size 12 so slightly bigger than you, but you look like you and Dave fit well.

I think it's about how you feel when sat on them too. I'm 5'10/11 and currently too many kg. I'm long in the leg and body so generally make most horses look small lol. I find I don't feel "right" on anything much smaller than 15hh but have ridden for a friend on her 14.2 gypsy cob and 14hh Fell with no issues. Neither of them batted an eyelid at me...it was just me who felt like a giant. I have to say though that I truly hated riding the Fell, he felt very short and choppy, not my cup of tea.

He's beautiful DD!

Thank you! He's so handsome and just an all round nice friendly pony, he would follow you round all day just so he could be involved in whatever is happening. Still can't believe how lucky I got with him considering I bought him from a couple of photos and the seller describing him as a giant Labrador. ?

This is very true... I had a 12.1 Welsh x mystery (Shetland?) that was super chunky with a big shoulder and big barrel, most people eyeballed him at 13hh if there were no other ponies around to compare with.

Now I have a 12.2 Welsh B x Connie who is very delicate and looks tiny... but he has a much bigger stride and length of rein than the chunky guy, so I actually feel much more comfortable and balanced on him.

There is a marginally oversized 8 year old well schooled dales gelding for sale on H&H. That hardly ever happens. Spendy at £7.5k but they are so hardy and economical to keep it may be a spend to save scenario and think of the fun you could have. Can’t put a price on that.
£7.5k is a steal for that.I paid 8k for a 4year old gypsy cob and the dealer ,a couple of months later had a very nice five year old gypsy cob gelding which she asked 10k for and got it.

I'm in my 30s, 5'1" always had ponies. Current one is a 13.3/14hh welsh X cob.. Does a bit of everything. Always get asked when I am going to have a horse, but the older I get the more I want to stick to ponies! I love natives and their crosses (usually with cob). Bit of bone substance, but enough in the tank for me.

i usually need to screenshot the picture and then change the size from ‘actual size’ to large or less.

I dont even get that option, it comes up with he screenshot name and then a red line through it. i dont have any option to change the size

I emailed myself the picture which reduced the size automatically, saved it to the desktop from the email, then dragged it into the HHO picture box.
