My mum and I are looking to get back into riding - mum after ten years out of the saddle, and myself after having a baby at the beginning of this year. However, try as we might, we can't seem to find any yards that offer professional, competent service for adults in the Lewes / Ashdown Forest / Brighton area!

Lots of places around here seem to cater solely for children and consequently have Thelwell style riding school ponies in ramshackle surroundings. I'm also getting slightly annoyed with propritors who never call back when you leave messages asking to book lessons.

Although I have nothing against those sorts of establishments, I'm hoping to get into competing at dressage next year so would like lessons on something a bit more quality to improve my riding on.

Can anyone recommend a place around here? Is Ditchling Stud any good?

Thanks!

Very sadly there isn't anywhere locally :(. I had the same problem when I wanted schoolmaster lessons or lessons on a lunge. Ditchling is worth trying out - I've certainly not heard any negative reports. It seems that most people around here have their own horses and have instructors come to them.

One of my good friends teaches adults here ... and in fact often ends up with nervous novices precisely because there are so few good adult RS here that people go out and buy their own ... not always with good consequences!

Having said that I took a few lessons at Ditchling Common Stud a few years ago and they had a range of nice horses (2008 was the last time I was there). Quite pricey though and have heard its gone up!

Albourne is LOVELY and should be able to cater for your needs!

Cheers everyone. I think we're going to try all these places out and see which we like best. Pretty pricey though, isn't it! My riding lessons as a child (20 years ago, admittedly) were £4 for half an hour!

I was at Albourne EC for 2 years (ages ago), they were excellent, had a lovely range of horses and plenty of opportunities to go to shows with them.

2 other places I went to, no idea if they are still going (it's a been a while) is Hangleton EC, again excellent facilities and lovely horses. The other is Brendon RC. I went hacking a few times at Ditchling and they had very nice horses that were well behaved.
