Adult sized individuals who ride ponies.........

I'm 5'6", somewhere around 9 stone mark (can honestly say that I don't spend a lot of time thinking about how heavy I am as a rule) and regularly hack out and school my Dad's driving pony who is about 13.2/13.3hh ish, but is a fairly chunky monkey.

I don't think I have any photos of me riding her - but I shall have to get some this weekend I think!!!

I'm 23 yrs old and 5ft5". Murphy is 14.1hh, although admittedly built like a tank!! Have also ridden my friend's lovely 14hh NF cross quite a few times. Ponies are sooooooo much fun.

5'6, around the 9 - 9 1/2 stone mark and rode a 9.3hh last summer...

Mostly you'll find me on something around the 13hh mark.

5'11 and SOoo not telling my weight.... but I ride a 15.2 tank Welsh D. No pics as not my horse.

Pony Club rules state "A rider weighing over 54kg/8st 5lbs dressed to compete, may not ride a pony 128 cm or under. A rider weighing over 60kg/9st 4lbs may not ride a pony 133cm
or under."

Sturdy cobs can take a bit of extra weight but personally I dont like to see big adults riding ponies, it's cruel.

I was 5ft6 and aroung 8 and a 1/2 stone last easter holidays. it was then that I stopped riding my 20year old, 11.3hh shetlandX gelding

5'6, legs on the long side, 11 stone

On a 14.1 pony, takes a wide fitting saddle, 40" girth, 5'6 rugs

On a 13.1 pony, takes MW saddle, 38" girth, but a big strong mare - she fits all rugs etc of pony above (she is his successor)

For pony club competitions, fine but I don't think you can generalise like that. I think each case needs to be taken in its own situation.

Castle was only 12.2hh and I was about 5ft4 last year...

Arabs were bred for stamina and to carry MEN in the desert. Cowboys in the US ride Arabs and Arab racing is a big sport. I hardly think Sen is going to mind a balanced 5'9" lady with a light seat (me!) riding side saddle down the lane on her. Tall I am, big and cruel- I ain't.

Ah yes... I was attacked by someone on here about a year ago when I posted photos of Castle and I at a hunt meet... He happily jumped everything from 6 bar gates, hedges, to wire etc. out hunting with me on board, and I came 3rd at a Hunter Trial with him last April and I was doing the novice class (about 90cm - 1m fences). If he wasn't happy having me on board then he would've "told me" somehow!!

Oh what a lovely post as I love ponies

How tall are you and what size ? How many Hands are your ponies? Would you post pics of you mounted?

[/ QUOTE ]

NO!! Is my answer to the final question!! There is not a cat in hells chance of me EVER posting a pic of me riding on here!! Unless Berry finds another 6 inches overnight - by that I mean LEG length!!

No, actually it's not! That's actually a bloke - granted it's hard to tell though.

I'm 5'8" and 11-ish stone and have ridden 13,2hh fells and icelandics - none of which had a problem with my weight / size. One the other hand I've ridden a 16.2hh angelo-arab who was built like a radiator with no whithers and I felt massive! No piccies as I am a total technophobe!

OMG! I have just come one here and was so excited to see all of your replies and pics! Thank you so much everyone! All of the pictures were wonderful and I cannot wait to show them to my daughter in the morning! I have lots of ammo to convince her she is ok now! I think once she is able to have some fun on her when all this snow melts she will change her thinking and really start to love her.

Thanks again everyone! Glad to see I am not the only pony lover around

Native breeds - i.e. Welsh cobs, Highlands, Fjords, Icelandics, etc. - were bred to carry adults over difficult terrain and to carry fallen stock - such as Highlands carrying deer. They are stocky, incredibly strong and surefooted.
As for Arabs - the top endurance horses in the world that compete in 160km races have to carry a minimum of 75kgs. These horses can keep up an average speed of over 20km per hour. They are subject to strict veterinary inspections before, during and after the race. Many of them are around the 15hh mark.

I am 5ft2, weigh 9stone although in summer i can get down to about 8 1/2. my pony is 13.1 with shoes and certainly has no problem with my height or weight. i do sometimes feel a little tall and finding a saddle for her short back / my big bum wasn't very straightforward until we'd found the right one eventually. but she carries me for hunting, jumping and all general RClub activites.
