Adults on Ponies what do you do with them?

Mines 14.2 I manily do unaffilated dressage. But have done, unaffilated sj, cross country, showing, lots of sponsered rides and gymkana. I have had many people say "why do you get a horse" but I have so much fun on him and always learning.

The adults I know with ponies do dressage and showing. BD don't have height limits for horses and ponies, so you probably won't be the only one on a pony. A lady at our yard takes her pony to BD Elementary.

Many showing classes don't have age restrictions for the rider either. M&M classes are frequently full of adults on ponies, as are breed classes. The lady I mentioned above does veteren classes with her pony and they don't have height limits or age restrictions for the rider. Coloured classes don't have heigh restrictions either. But you may struggle with WH classes or if your pony isn't a recognised breed and doesn't fit into coloured or veteran classes. Having said that at RC type shows things are often more flexible and there will also be things like turn out classes and equitition classes.

SJ can be more of a problem, although if you affiliate then you can register your pony to compete as a horse.

BE I think has a lower height limit for horses/ponies so you probably can't event.

Trec and endurance are both popular with adults on ponies.

There is a mounted games association for adults that might be worth checking out.

There is always hunting, unaffiliated hunter trials, jump cross, team chasing etc and also other things like doing historical re-enactments or skill at arms or polo cross etc.

Do whatever you want! I know people with ponies who do everything.

Would like to clear something up though, driving horses/ponies generally are better at varying their length of stride and speed in a gait than riding horses! A good driving horse will have a good few "gears" in their trot. My favourite driving horse had 4 very distinct different trots, ultra collected down hill, easy jog, working trot and a flying extended. He wasn't anything special either

Sold them.....well I sold one and put my other out on loan to a kid....she was my pony of a lifetime as was so smart and literally did absolutely everything.

Love a laughable pony ride every now and then...mainly just messing about with the previous ja pony we had, she was quite fun jumping 1.20+ bareback!

But not permenantly. Only every now and then. Far too tall for them and doesn't sit fair to me anyway having to lug me round. Give me the nice big hunters now anyday ;)

Over 17 years my lovely boy has done Riding Club Dressage and jumping, Side Saddle, Fun Rides, Holidays and Hacks! He is a superstar and I would only ever ride a pony as I am small. Too many riders are totally overhorsed and I believe this is one of the reasons that they do nothing with their mounts except ride around arenas! till the horse goes nuts - then they wonder why they misbehave. Never mind what it looks like - get something you can cope with!
The other side of the coin is that some people assume that riding a pony must be easier than riding a horse or they are slow! My little Welsh guy was as sharp as a tack when he was younger and can still throw a pretty good spook now if he is in the mood. See my post "Bad manners on Fun Rides" - a "get it off your chest" moment!
