Adults on ponies

Hiya all:) I’m pretty new here so I hope this is in the correct category!

I am currently backing our youngster who is standing at 14’1. I realise he has more filling out to do yet and maybe a little more increase in height but I’m worried I’m too big on him.

He’s homebred and my little star, he was always going to be mine to ride but I fear now we’re at this stage I’m maybe a little too big and don’t want to accept it!

Could I please have your thoughts and advice? He’s 14,1 Welsh D cross, and I’m 5ft3 weighing 9 and a half stone!

Deffo not to heavy or big.
This is me on my 13.2hh welsh C.
Im 5ft 4 and considerably heavier than you

I don't see it as a problem either, I rode my 14.1 NF mare for 20 + years and competed to quite high levels.

Thankyou, he is a very special little pony. He knows he is gorgeous and he uses it to his advantage at every opportunity!

Whilst you are backing, fittening and building muscle keep it to frequent but short sessions so none of his muscles ever get too tired or sore
 
You look great so don't stress!

My lad was 14.1hh at 4, but by 7 yrs he measured 15hh, and had filled out a lot too boot.

When I started him I was 10 stone and 5ft5 - I am obviously still the same height (!), but sadly middle age has caught up with me weight wise but he shows no signs of struggling thank goodness.
 
I’m 5’5 and 10st riding my 14.1 connie.
I wouldn’t want to be any heavier on her and am super careful about fitness, having her back done and saddle fitting, but she’s quite a fine type, not as solid as your lovely lad.

I'm a similar size/weight to you. I fit into clothes designed for teenagers and on ponies they've become too tall to ride! I've always had ponies, biggest one I own being 15hh. I've jumped competitively on a 14hh pony no problems.

OH is only slightly taller than I am. His pony was 14.1hh as a 3 year old and stands at a stocky 14.3hh now, aged 5 - so yours might grow yet. That pony didn't take up my leg well until this year, but has happily carried our 5ft6 friend no problems.

I also ride my son's 13.1hh pony - she takes up my leg well and carries me fine. My own little mare is only 14hh. She's feisty and strong and we've jumped competitively and hacked for miles.

OP you’re not too big for him (he’s really lovely by the way). I’m 5ft 8 and my mare is 14hh (Dales x), I’ve had horses up to 17.3hh and I’d never go back to horses again, ponies are amazing fun.
 
you are absolutely fine on him! he looks gorgeous!

One of the best ponies I ever rode was a tiny wee mare who was barely up to my ribcage. I was smaller horizontally at the time of course so I wouldnt do it now but she had a great time and so did I. If it works it works! I think you look fabulous on him and hes a very handsome boy!
 
I'm 5'7 and quite a bit heavier than you. I have a 14.2 new forest that I retired sound at age 27 who was only ever lame from Cushing induced laminitis. He competed with great success in every discipline going. Now he's a field ornament and I will be looking for something very similar as his replacement (though I think I'll be very lucky to find one as good again)
