Adults riding ponies... Opinions please

I think they are very lucky!

If I was short I'd have a native pony I think. The idea of not having to plait appeals! ;)

They are super fun, cheap to keep, easy to handle and versatile - what's not to like??

In fact the most successful competition rider on my old yard was an adult on a pony. They did dressage and showing.
 
i would love to be able to ride a pony (14hh + range), but my height is 5'6 and i weigh far to much for a poor pony (13 stone) other wise i would buy one tomorrow (really if i thought they would cope i would).
i find they have more fun, less to fall, and they just have that thing about them that horses just dont have.
 
The only issues I would say are if you want to do affiliated show jumping or eventing then there is a minimum height for the horse if you are an adult.

Not sure about the rules for BE but BS you can definately jump senior classes on a pony provided it is registered as a horse, we do regularly! Fleur is 14.1 & we are aiming eventually at senior Newcomers, would far rather have her than a big horse as I am only 5'1 & weigh about 8st, if you are happy with your pony & he can do the job then stick with it.
 
I find it really odd that people have this perception about how adults on ponies are seen, go to any county show and nearly all the natives will be ridden by adults. It's not even questioned, I'm a bit confused by all the concern on here about it by both pony and horse riders?
 
My boyfriend rides and competes my 14.1hh connie at the moment if that helps! Dont care what anyone thinks, hes not too heavy for her, and theyre a great partnership!!
 
I'm 29 5'6 and have a 5 yr old 14hh Welsh d and absolutely love him. I can do anything with him, he is an absolute gem to ride, has lovely paces and is so safe and sane. Infact I rode him last night after him having about 10 days off and he was fab. I'm very lucky, can't see myself ever going back to a horse! We do dressage, showing and jump for fun at home and are having a grand time!
 
Absolutely nothing wrong with adults riding ponies, providing the adult is neither too heavy nor too tall for that particular pony. Enjoy your new pony OP:D
 
If the horse is not under any strain and you two match, why not? I think it looks more stupid when someone who is 5 foot nothing is on a 16+hh monster than an adult on a pony. As long as both parties are happy, who else cares?

I get vertigo on anything over 15.2h ;)

My mare is just scraping 14h, I just scrape 5'1 and today weigh 120lbs whatever that is in stone :confused:

Nothing wrong with adults and ponies at all.
A huge plus as far as I am concerned is that I can actually get on fro the ground should I need to, downside is that I am closer to the ground and get muddier and wetter faster than I would on a bigger horse;)
 
Littlewildone, I have ridden bessie (i think) and freddie! Freddie decided to tank off with me which was hilarious! That is how I ended up pony shopping after a 10 year break from horses! That little pony has a lot to answer for haha x
