Adults riding ponies

I used to exercise county level fell ponies and I'm 5'8" and weigh about 11 stone. Never had any problems with them (except for a lack of brakes occasionally!

). Recently went to Iceland and rode 13.1hh Icelandics which were awesome!

I competed a 14.2hh up until I was about 20 I think. He was brilliant though and I didnt want to let go of him! I was a bit big for him to be honest but he was sturdy so the weight wasnt a problem. We often beat the horses in senior classes and he got quite a name for himself! So I dont think people "looked down" on me as such but I did get regular comments about when I would get a horse.

I have horses now, but still buy the odd "project pony" which are usually 14.2hh's which I take out competing. I even had a 13.2hh I did a dressage competition on (I really was massive on him!).

Grown up people should not ride anything less than 16.2!!!! Even if they are 4'9 and weigh 5 stone!

PSSSST I'm being a troll tonight!!!!

I am 5`4" and ride our 13.2hh, 14.2hh and 16.2hh
The little pony does feel a bit on the small side, having said that, I do feel like a pea on a drum on my husband`s horse!
I think some people probably laugh behind my back when I am on the little beastie, but that may be more to do with the fact that he is a naughty little pony who is always shying, spooking, bucking, tanking off - just misbehaving in any way he can!

I'm 24 (well almost 25) and Toff is 13.3hh

Don't have a problem and haven't had any comments, just limiting with some comps such as Trailblazers SJ (If I actually did well at SJ

I have a 13.2hh Welsh B x Arab and a 14.3hh Welsh D and am 5'2.5 and 29, when I first got the 13.2hh some people made comments about getting a 'proper' horse that could do things (she's a rescue) but I ignored them and 10 years on I'm pleased I did

Lucky you having a Fell!!

I had one til a little while ago when she had to go to fund my daughter and her eventing bug....

No problem with adults on ponies at all. I LOVED my Fell to pieces and had great times with her. She was 13.1 or 13.2 ish and I'm 5ft 7in and quite a weight with it - she still managed to bolt with me/throw me off/jump well & give me a great time depending on mood............!

I'm 5'7'' and have a 14hh welsh mare and a 14.3 anglo arab gelding. Cant imagine ever wanting anything bigger than that. Both carry me far too easily

My mate has a 14hh welsh, im 21, 5ft 3 weigh 11st hoping to get back down to 10 maybe 9 and half and i ride her

fingers crossed may be getting her on loan soon 2!

I'm 5'6" and own and ride a 14hh Highland mare, I don't look big on her and people do look down on her. I enjoy her, so that's all that concerns me. I do get annoyed when people tell me to buy a 'proper' horse next time.

Yes, am 22yo, 5ft 9 ish i think, Holly is 14hh Welsh D, and we're taking her SJ Thursday evening, to a little practice show and if all goes well i may start competing her in Trailblazers again.

I am 22, 5ft 5 and my pony is a 14.1hh fell cross...he is bilt like a tank and I've never had any comments...and TBH I'm having far too much fun to notice what anyone thinks!!

I have a 14.2hh Welsh D, I am 5ft 8", 10 stone and 18 years old. Am a bit too tall for her which makes saddle fitting interesting as we have to make a compromise between fitting it to her and fitting it to me, I usually lose out and end up having to jump in a saddle with no space to shorten up my stirrups as there's nowhere for my knees to go

In all seriousness, I've never had a bad comment, she makes up in gorgeousness and talent for what she lacks in size. She rides a lot bigger than she is.

I ride anything 14.2 up, but please bear in mind we have every right to ride horses and shouldn't be looked down upon for it either!

Of course you shouldn't, that wasnt the point of this post. Its completely everyones own choice what height they prefer, Im just saying it annoys me when people think adults should automatically ride horses. I have nothing against bigger horses, I used to ride a lovely 17hh warmblood

We have a 14.1 TB x cob and a 15.2 TB, they take exactly the same rug, saddle and and girth size, the TB x just has shorter legs! So realy it depends on the shape of the horse not the height. I love my pony but am probably a little big for her, I could do with something a little wider or deeper in the girth, however wouldnt change her for the world. I am about 5'4 and vary from between 8.5 - 9.5 stone (nearer the later post xmas!)

I have 2 ponies and I'm 23, 5'6 and weigh 8 stone. I still ride my 13hh section B gelding who I have had for 15 years now with no trouble. My 4 year old Appaloosa x NF is about 14.1/14.2 (should really measure her...) and I really enjoy riding her, plus she rides quite big anyway. They both have a huge amount of personality and I love them to bits. If I went out to buy something else I probably would get something about 15.3hh but being only 23 with a mortgage and 2 already, that wont be for a long time lol!

Having said that, I had a lesson on saturday and my instructor started asking how big she was, how tall i was and then said well i suppose you dont look too big on her...but you would look too small on anything above 16hh...which to tell the truth did upset me a bit but hey ho!

im 5ft4, 11stone and i ride a 14hh connemara. I'd never let a kid ride my connie either as he's a nutter and if you get it wrong he lets you know all about it!
I dont like rideing anything over about 15hh. too far off the floor for me and i realy dont see the need.

My mum doesnt really like anything bigger than 14.2/3hh but she looks perfectly fine and never gets any remarks about it.
I think alot of people think that when they are 'older' they need a bigger horse, not always the case
wink.gif

Anyway ponies are MUCH more fun!
