adults riding ponies

I'm 33 and 5ft not a lot. I have a 14.1 coblet and a 16.3 ex racer. Feel fine on either. Did once arrive at a show for horse classes on coblet to be told ponies were in the morning and had my mum mis read the schedule - I was 26 at the time!

My pony is a 14hh Welsh - I'm 36 & 5ft2. I have ridden bigger (18.2 Shire) but enjoy riding ponies - much more fun and full of character. Besides they're easier and cheaper to keep - which I think is the main reason a lot of adults like to keep them - that and around here most of the mums share the ponies with their kids x

I'm 5.9 and am 12 stone and iv got a highland pony who's 14hh, I'm starting to back but won't ride on until next summer. I love this pony to bits I really do but I am worried sick that I will be to heavy. I am losing weight for him ( lost 1 stone 3 Ibs so far)

I inherited my daughters welsh cob,who is 14.1 and absolutely love her, easy very forward and just wants to please.A while ago she had to lead some very scared big horses on a hack, which must have looked very odd.I'm 5ft 5ish and do not look big on her.
Yesterday i jump judged at an eventers challenge and saw many adult competitors on ponies, all doing very well.
There are also adults jumping on ponies at affiliated competitions, again with good results, being much faster against the clock than the bigger horses.
Lastly we should never forget the achievements of the famous Stroller, with his then adult rider.

Trust me - you will be absolutely fine as you are to ride a Highland! They are designed to be weight carriers and it's safe to say that if you took him toa show up here in Scotland you'd be one of the lighter weight riders in the ring! He will carry you eeeeeeasily! Well done on the weight loss so far but don't stress yourself out about losing more as the pony will be fine.

EKW thanks so much, means a lot. Iv had him since he was weaned and can't bare the thought of letting him go iv never had a bond with any horse like I do with this lad. :)

I think you'll be fine on a highland!!

I am mindful of my weight for my 13.3 (sec D) but I have (ashamedly!) been almost 13 stone at one point and she still didn't bat an eye. However been less than 12 stone for a while now.

When he is older he will carry you and half the village school but he will be fine for you forever
I have two highlands an 18 year old who has carried me at a varieties of weights from 12 to 15 stone and done everything including jumping small fences and TREC
I also have a 4 year old just backed mare and she is quite happy with me at 11.5 stones and was ridden for about 5 minutes by someone much heavier
Both are between 13.2 and 14hh
Ponies are the best and are actually much better than horses for toughness and soundness in most cases. I believe they make far better riding animals for the majority of private owners
