Have your horse's had any adverse reaction to their annual jabs, tetanus & Flu? If they have can you post what the reaction was, how bad it was & how long it lasted............thanks.

Yes. Lethargic, running a temperature, not eating haylage but did eat hard feed. Lasted 4 days.
Two other horses injected on the same day had a similar reaction, 1 was worse than mine. 3 others had no ill effects.

Mine had a large reaction two years ago to his flu tet, his neck was so stiff the day after that he couldn't eat or drink from the floor, was shaking all over and looked like he had tied up. There is a long thread way back on BD about a certain brand of vaccine and it was the same one that caused my horse's problem. He was so sore he had to have the vet out (more expense) to give him a painkiller to settle it all down. I have never had him vaccinated in the neck since, far too risky, we do it in the brisket now.

Had my horse vaccinated for a few years with no problems. Then in 2011 he got a small hard lump at the injection site on his neck than took 3 months to go down.

In 2012 we used a brand he'd had previously but this time he got a melon sized lump on his chest that made him lame in walk, temperature, snotty nose, lethargic etc.

4 weeks later he had to have another flu jab. This time we tried hindquarters plus iv flunixin but he reacted even worse and essentially had full blown flu. He needed 6 months off work and has been left with severe copd.

Nightmare.

One of my mares always has a bad reaction - just like she has the flu really. She gets a very stiff neck and so I have to give her her feed, hay and water above ground level. It passes after a few days though. I did mention it to the vet and he advised that they do keep records of this and pass back to manufacturers for info..

one of mine ended up with a huge swelling on his neck on his first annual jab, took a week or so for it to go down and it was incredibly tender and sore, he now has his injections in his bum just in case. my older boy goes incredibly lethargic, and pretty much stops eating anything but grass and treats for about 5/7 days after- wouldnt be so bad, but his vaccs are in jan :(

Mine old horse ended up spending 3 months in the vets having the lump drained and removed...He did return to full work afterwards but had a huge dent in his neck.

Sorry to hear this, but I've heard many similar stories (including my own experiences of vaccinating my horse). I can't understand why vets deem them to be needed yearly for horses/dogs etc when the same isn't recommended for humans. Are you planning to carry on vaccinating RobinHood?

Mine had the classic reaction that most have mentioned, stiffness in the neck so he couldn't reach down to feed. Swelling of the glands in the neck & he also had the shakes, it was horrible to see him like this.

I have no issues with jabbing for tetanus, a terrible & normally fatal disease, but the flu jab seems to cause more issues than it resolves. I have to have that jab as we compete but in all the years of competing we've never had to produce our passport. :(
