Nitty's hock looks worse than when she went in to surgery. She is having a reaction to her internal stitches (vicryl according to the vet) Does anyone know how long they take to dissolve and when I might see some improvement? If at all. I am having a bit of a funk that it is going to end up just the same as before we had the lump removed and that it will be curtains for her. Not like me to be panicy but I am tonight! I wish she wasn't so reactive. It is a constant battle to keep her legs from blowing up! Stupid filly.

I've posted in NL but thought I'd pop in here incase there were any vets in tonight.

Vicryl holds its strength for about 30 days, and is completely gone by about 60 days. If it truly is a reaction to the suture material, then removing them may well be the best idea and replacing with a different material.
I would suspect that may well be other factors other than a suture material reaction causing an issue, as they are fairly uncommon. If a reaction is strongly suspected then it could be tested by placing a loop of vicryl through some loose skin on the neck, along with some different suture materials, then assessing the amount of reaction 2-3 days later. If a reaction was confirmed this would also help guide which material to be used in the future (i.e. the one with least reaction).

Don't know if this is helpful or not but my little JRT bitch had a huge reaction after spaying. Her wound was puffy and hard but not infected. The external sutures looked great but eventually she was obviously uncomfortable and not healing properly. They took her in and said where she had had the internal layers closed was very inflamed. They removed all the sutures, used something else?? internally and reclosed with staples externally. She was right as rain in no time. She is a sensitive thin skinned little thing and is very reactive to lots of things.
I am sure, if it is the same thing as we had, they can undo the problem fairly easily.

misst that is exactly what it is like. She is going to go out and have a proper course of Danilon and see how she goes with that. They're dissolvable so the theory is that they'll be gone in a month or so anyway. If she hasn't got significantly better in that time we'll rethink.

She isn't sore, she is absolutely full of it! She is actually trying to kill me the moo.
