Has anyone experienced this? I put my horse on it last tues and by thurs, he started getting small bumps on his hindquarters. couldnt work out if it was the heat, or feed etc but I was away for weekend - went down to see him today and he is covered in small raised bumps all over his body esp. shoulders, flank and general hip area. He's been rubbing his tail and his skin is hot to touch. Poor boy isnt very happy at all. I clipped him today and left him unrugged tonight to try and cool him off a bit. Spoke to vet and he is going to get a shot of dex tomorrow to settle things don hopefully. Obviously he's come off the redcell today but just wondering if anyone has seen similar reactions in other horses?
Also I'm hoing it is just the redcell and not something more serious...no way of knowing really though.

Could he have become too hot? I find that if a horse is over-rugged in hot weather they get "heat rash"

They sound like protein lumps?? Do you have a picture of them? Look up protein lumps on google and see if they look the same. Horses can get them from an intolerance to high protein products usually ones containing high amounts of wheat or barley - harmless apparently.

Hi, my pony had a viral infection and was chesty so was put on anti b's, ventipulmin, red cell and had a feed including alfalfa. He came up in the most horrendous lumps like he had fallen in a big patch of nettles all over his body. His legs swelled up like elephants legs too. We didnt know which product it was he was reacting to so took him off all of them and after about a week they went down though the vet was reluctant to give him anything as she really didnt know what was going on!!!! It was one of the most stressful and distressing periods I have had!

We still to this day dont know if he had a protein reaction to the alfalfa or reaction to any of the others which makes it very nerve racking incase he needs anti b's in the future.
So sorry cant tell you if it was but I am interested to hear that it may have been the red cell as that makes future treatment easier! If you get anymore feedback/ info from your vet I would be very interested to hear.
Hope your horse improves quickly.
