I wondered if you could help my friend please. She's advertised her mare on Horsequest in the dressage/allround/broodmare sections but hasn't had much interest.

Could anyone take look at the ad and see if there is anything glaringly obvious that would indicate as to why? There is a photo and video of her moving in the advert.

The advert is headed as "Stunning Dressage Prospect" and the ad reads :

Stunning 158cm (LHC) mare, 11 years old

Sweet natured temperament and easy to handle on the ground

Excellent active paces with good hock action

Competed lightly unaffiliated at dressage and has no points but would excel affiliated and still eligible for prelim/novice classes

Shown lightly and recently started pole work

Proven brood mare as bred stunning foal

Good to box, shoe, trim etc

Not novice ride, would suit confident and knowledgeable home

Any clues

I would take out the still eligable for prelim/novice as if she has only been competing unaff then course she won't have any BD points. What is the mare like to hack - there is no mention of this in the ad. Has the mare done any hunting etc? Breeding? To me the ad sounds as if she is an 11yo that hasn't really done an awful lot. What is she advertised at?

Ok, my first thought was it took ages to find the ad!

Second thoughts are the pics are awful. The horse looks nice enough but the pics don't help. Confo shots would help as would maybe one of her foal. There's no mention of her breeding which if I was looking at a broodmare I'd want to know.

Thirdly, I think she's overpriced for the market she's aiming at.

Sorry!

Try H&H, I had no luck with horse mart or project horse but sold with H&H straight away, mind you I was selling at a very reasonable price.

I have to say that I think that is a very optimistic price for an 11 yo horse that hasn't really done anything. Especially as the mare is not a novice ride.

I think she is going to have to drop it down quite alot to get any interest.

I think she's also on Horsemart. Priced at £3900ono but home is the most important factor I'd think.

This is the link to her vid as I know horsequest can take ages to trawl through video

Thank you for your replies, I'll pass them onto her

I personaly think that is far too much, (unless she has outstanding breeding).

Agree with others, sounds like a 11year who has done nothing. Need to include breeding and possibly think about taking her out on a class ticket to make her more appealing.

Thanks for the replies.

Can anyone suggest something positive I can send back to my friend please? Could anyone ride a more suitable advert and suggest a price bracket so that she has something to think about? I think the mare has shown as a hack, she's a TB but I don't know her breeding (owner will!) and they've decided to go down dressage route (for now) instead of showing.

Thanks for your help

At the moment, anything that can't be guaranteed to be safe for your average numpty doesn't seem to be selling. Putting anything like "not novice ride" is the kiss of death. Maybe put an explanation why she wouldn't be suitable for a novice and put a more positive spin on it?

Think price is the biggest problem - horses like that are selling for around £1500 - £2500 at the moment. You only have to open the pages of H&H to find a horse with BD or BE points for less than £3500 so I really don't hold out much hope for your friend getting any interest.

Horses with BE points for less than 3.5k?!! Where?!!

OP, it is more that "safe allrounder" types are selling over and over again, but anything with possible quirks etc isnt. It would be worth either getting more experience under her belt (so be able to ask more £ ), or dropping the price to make her more appealing

Sorry!

Heading of stunning dressage prospect isnt very catchy either. Would make me think its a youngter.

i would get a better video, or remove it tbh. It shows a horse who is advertised for dressage striking off on wrong canter lead and being inconsistent through the trot. I dont think the spook at the poles is helpful either - sorry

Definately too much if your friend is in Scotland with you.

Most things up here seem to sell by word of mouth. Tell everyone you can, and advertise in local tack stores and the yellow paper.

When I was looking, I didn't even look on Horsemart cause the majority of the horses were down south and I couldn't travel.

QR- I would just like to clarify that it's not my horse. I've posted on behalf of a friend as we've been emailing about her mare for sale (she is aware of post). I've never seen the horse and know no more about her than what is in the ad. So no point pm'ing me looking to bargain down her price

ETA friend is in derbyshire area

I am a novice rider and I watched that video and thought it did very little for the mare. I'm no expert but she looks (to my untrained eye) unbalanced and sloppy for a horse described as a "Stunning Dressage Prospect".

I think they need to drop the price and ham her up a little less, very nice sounding mare, but not at that price or with that description.

Why not a novice ride? I think this will put people off. Tell your friend to be more specific - does she hack alone? Try to say more about what she does.

She's a nice mare, but the video doesn't do her justice. She often looks rushed and her transitions are very unbalanced.

11 is quite old for a competition prospect - this suggests a youngster. I think it would be better to emphasize what she HAS done - ie placings, scores etc. Say could affiliate? Certainly no need to say eligible for prelim.

Hope this is of some help. I think the price is too high too.

I would remove the word 'stunning' for a start - hate when that's used in an ad. I haven't looked at the ad so don't know how true it is but it's very objective and doesn't really mean anything.

Also a dressage 'prospect' aged 11? Maybe remove that and emphasise more on what the horse has done/achieved at unaffiliated level noting she would easily affiliate.

Remove the bit about starting pole work - I don't think it needs mentioning as the ad is really about it being a dressage horse, and gives the impression the horse really hasn't done a lot which makes it seem overpriced.

I think your friend may have to consider reducing the asking price to be honest.

What a really lovely, lovely mare. The pictures show more than enough to highlight how nice she is. It's a shame she is being ridden rather badly in the video - and some nice conformation shots may be a good replacement.

As nice as she is, she seems to be vastly overpriced. Unless it can be said that she is a genuine all rounder, who is 100% on the roads and has actually done something in her 11 years - then I think the maximum you can hope to get is around the £2.5k mark.

Which is a shame - because she looks smashing.

Thank you Amy May, I've always thought she looks really nice in the pics I've seen of her. She has shown her but would prefer her not to go to a showing home hence focusing on emphasising dressage. It's the instructor riding in video I think. She is good to hack and fine on roads. I'll pass your comments on. Thank you again

If the horse is good to hack and fine on roads then emphasise this!! People are always looking for this over and above what the horse can do on a competitive level. You widen your market if the horse is good to hack out.

Far to old to be starting a serious dressage career, which is what the heading suggests. Better to present her as a RC/alrounder type, with the comments others have mentioned. You could mention something more specific on the dressage if she has actually achieved much, for example 'scoring 65%+ unaff elem dressage' or whatever.

She should advertise her as a nice allrounder, she is certainly not a 'stunning dressage prospect'
As an allrounder she should get 2.5k for her
I absolutely wouldnt advertise her with that video, the rider is not doing the mare any favours
