Advertising or replying to wanted ads?

If you have something you wish to sell, do you advertise it or do a small research to see if anyone is looking for that item and reply to their ads?

If one is a better way, which way is it?
Does it favour the seller (me) in anyway? (££?) Or would it just be a kind gesture to the purchaser to give them first refusal?

Both. I put advert up then contact the wanted ads pointing them to my advert.
