I saw a horse that looked lovely for sale locally, but at the bottom of the advert it said "NO TIMEWASTERS OR JOY RIDERS!" which made me think that the owner was rude and going to rush me, so I didn't bother going to see the horse!
Also "Re-advertised due to timewasters" puts me off, as before I got my horse I had one I wanted to buy, but a) he failed the vetting, and b) it turned out the owner was lying about his show record, so I decided not to proceed with the purchase. A day later his ad was back up with 're-advertised due to timewasters' plastered across it...
I HATE HATE HATE adverts written by the horse!!!! I hate any advert that just isnt professional. I dont want to know if you have put your three old child on your tb on the lead rein, I dont care if he calls you when you bring him his dinner, I dont want to know how he is everybody at the yards favourite etc!
It always makes me sceptical when people miss things off adverts eg good/100% to box clip shoe traffic. When an advert just says good to box, shoe etc I always read into it that they are not able to put in writing that it is 100% traffic/clip (i.e. the things not listed).
Lack of good pictures is also a major gripe. I have to say most of the horses I have actually taken the time to phone up about/go and view have had good pictures either on the ad or by E-mail and video available or again sent via E-mail. Does make a big difference to me when looking.
My biggest hate though is dealers pretending to be private sellers. If they have nothing to hide why pretend to be selling privately?
I am not fussed about pictures as I don't think they show a lot, they are often out of date anyway.
I hate re-advertised due to timewasters as it can often indicate that something has cropped up down the line of the purchase.
Missing details, I hate it if something like height, color, gender or age is missed of, these are really crucial.
Lying really hacks me off, when I was looking for my 1st horse (at the age of 20 and with a very experienced friend) I only sat on 2 out of 15 we went to see, ALL were advertised as novice rides and my friend was bucked, reared, cantered sideways, kicked out at and a whole host of other things. Grrrr
The word 'stunning' has to be the most overused, inaccurate and pointless epithet. If the horse costs 2grand, its unlikely to be stunning !! Also 'potential' if its over 9 years old. POA just irritates me as it can mean anything from 5k to 200k.
Good adverts say height, age, breeding, what its done and what they think it can do, vices/no vices, location and contact details. I think good photos are a big help and a video is even better, because if you dont like it on the video you wont go and see it and that saves everyone time. I also find the timewasters thing annoying, you arent going to buy every horse you see and deciding not to proceed doesnt make you a timewaster.
You know I would have agreed with an awful lot of what people have put here BUT when I was after my last horse I saw this quite ropey advert.Poor pictures, poor spelling and what looked like an awful lot of money for a small welsh cob.I thought, cheeky kid pushing her luck.T re read the advert though and thought he sounded likely and he was nearby anyway so worth a look.I dragged my long suffering instructor with me and we found the newbie! He was just perfect and my normally parsimonious (sp?) and hyper criticali nstructor thought he was worth the money. One of the best things I have done!
When the simple basics are missing. How hard can it be to include age / height / gender / cost!?
I actually just looked at one that said "looks well for age"!? No age stated, so 20-30 perhaps or 2-3?.
