Adverts: wording that puts you off.

I hate seeing a pic of a tiny tot sitting on a huge horse just to 'prove' it's safe. Nope, that doesn't convince me!

'First to see will buy' ... and when you ring and ask if they've had a lot of interest/viewings... they say: "oh yes" !!

And finally. The 18yr old horse that 'has potential to go to the top in the right hands'....the top of what exactly?!

If hanna (least we dare forget her name!) is so good, and her price so low I could be forgiven to thinking its an urgent sale due to money issues???????????

But no she wants to replace her - why, then is it an urgent sale?


TBH i have had some idiots come to try my horses. I once had for sale a TB, 6yrs jumping fx/1.3m. nice horse up for £8k. Now you would think if you were interested in buying a horse especilay at this price you'd learn to ride first????????? Oh no, up turns this bloke mid 40's "wanting to event" training with such and such etc etc got the branded gear. trouble is he couldnt do rising trot!! im not joking, he wasn't a "bad" rider, he just couldnt actulay ride!

Anyway slinky looks at me sideways, ears go back, back archs and I shout at him. He has never bucked, a real sweetheart tryer of a horse, but boy was he upset he was going to chuck him straight off!!! I had to stop the chap at this point and ask politely to get off, or be thrown off! Slinky didnt ride right for about 2 weeks after that, bless him. I never did find the right rider for him, just too soft.

Needs confident rider

- don't mind not novice ride, or anything like that, but the phrase confident rider says to me that it does something a bit horrid - nasty stop, big buck/rear/bolt/nap etc - rather than just quirky or fiesty

Interesting that you say this - I have just advertised my boy for share and said that he needs a confident rider for hacking alone. This is true as he can be nappy if you aren't committed. He needs to be ridden out alone in a firm contact and with lots of leg so he uses his brain, otherwise he can be a nappy little g1t. I think he's nervous alone and hence needs the confidence to come from the rider.

Having had this experience, an advert stating that a confident rider would not put me off - I would always call for more information. I think that's probably the case for most of the phrases that would initially put me off.

The only one I would never call about would be POA, as I just think it's arrogant to not put a price. What would be the point viewing if you didn't know what you were looking at money wise?!

To me, homebred is not about manners or quality, I would use this term in the add as a short way of saying 'I have bred that horse, therefore known it all its life, its full vet history and quite possibly its dam/sire or both can be seen'

Yep - that's what it means when I use it. I can provide pictures of the horse since it was a few hours old, I have its dam, usually its sire (or if a homebred dam then its grandsire), chances are I have its grandmother as well and at least 1-2 full siblings (younger or older). I have its complete history, know it inside out and know just the sort of person/life it will suit. If it's more than 3 then it's been backed here too!

It's one of the great advantages of buyingfrom a good stud!
