Advice about a pony that's reluctant to eat and is thin

What a dramatic turn of events, is the pony suddenly up to weight too?

So glad that your 'friends' pony :D is on the up.

Ooh I didn't know you could only post a max of 30 smilies at a time. Don't they look pretty? (genuine) :)

Oh what a total load of rubbish!

So sorry OP, but NO ONE was originally rude on this thread, they simply suggested you get the vet.

Read the original post back. What did you THINK people would say?? 'Oh that's all totally normal behaviour, whack another rug on and carry on as you are?'

Get real! Why ask for advice if when anyone says something you don't agree with, you just have a strop?

There are some very knowledgable people on here who have given you some good advice.

Quite honestly now......what did you EXPECT people to say!?

Well I wish whenever my horse has been ill or injured before she could have bloomin well recovered that miraculously and quickly. Would have saved me a fortune!

I would also like to know how OP can actually say that horse is absolutely fine, given it hasn't even seen a vet?

Patterdale - how rude! Please respect the OP's wishes. Fluffy bunnies only from this point forward, nice comments only.

As long as the 'friend's' feelings aren't hurt ay!? Sod the pony!

Magic! I do dislike it when we get further info on a later post which supposedly explains the behaviour observed (like not ever having been fed hard feed or stabled tho presumably used to lots of rugs....).

Fwiw I would be cautious about vaccinating a below par pony, but am sure that your vet will advise you appropriately.

eh.. id be getting the vet, and why is the horse still getting worked while showing all the signs of being obviously ill?! tell your friend to get the vet, something is obviously wrong. if it was mind and he was off his food or wasnt drinking even for a day id at least be phoning for advice!

sorry if someones already said this!

ETA just read the rest of the thread. i wish i knew what the magical cure was so i could bottle it and take it on dragons den

A lack of water can lead to colic so I would make your horses feed watery if now eating to try and get some fluid in.

I do hope your horse is getting better as you said, however after reading your other threat, I'm not convinced it is your friend.

I've had to call the vet out 3 times in the last week as mine has over reached and cut himself. Dreading the bill but unfortunately that's horses and welfare has to come before financial loss.

Please get insurance so if something does go wrong, you have the reassurance that you can claim against it. If you can't afford a vets fee for a visit in the nicest way possible maybe you can't afford a horse and consider sharing until your situation changes.

Just to let you all know, the pony is fine now.

I think it was just a change of scenery that she needed to settle down to.

She is now eating and drinking as usual and we have now found a feed she will eat. It was the sugarbeet that she didn't like!!! Rang the emergency vet and she said to syringe a salt solution into her mouth to encourage her to drink. This worked :)

The vet said there would be no point her coming out on an emergency (this was sat evening) as there would be nothing she could do as the pony was eating/drinking some things, just a very very very small quantity - not enough as we'd like!!!!

The vet will be coming out tomorrow as she needs her injections anyway but there is nothing to worry about :) She has settled down now and is happy :) She has not been hard feeded before or stabled so perhaps this disorientated her a little :)

We are still trying to encourage her to increase her food intake but I'm sure this will all come with time :)

Only nice replies please :) There is no point upsetting someone over the internet just to get a kick out of it :) I don't say nasty things to anyone else so I really don't see how I deserve unkind/rude/judgemental replies :) you would not like it if it was done to you

I am trying to use this forum to assist me with any queries I have in general... I clearly made a mistake by involving a genuine "real life" case and in future I will ONLY post general posts which don't identify me/my friend's choices/situations in any way.

Completely a mistake on my part to think a forum would be kind :) :) :)

*Puts head in hands and groans*

Yeah, you sound like you really took the advice, and you're vet sounds a peach too.

Poor pony

Oh patterdale don't you get it, the pony is very much loved and recieves the best level of care possible. Only earlier I was reading op was considering overhauling its feeding regime, and she has the best system for this, nutritional value? No! Fibre content? No! Calorie count? No! Sugar levels? No!

So what is this fantastic system op has to help her choose a new and better feed for her poorly ned?

You will never guess, it is genius.....

its the good old tried and tested FREE GIFT, yep you've heard it all, read the thread 'whAt feed companies give free feed bins with feed?

God I have to remember that one for when I want new feed for ben:eek::eek::eek:

What????!!! Shocking suggestion!!!! A horse AND insurance... That you pay for???!!! Never heard something so ludicrous in my life:eek:

Exactly!!

Pmsl at the "vet says there is no point coming out as there's nothing they can do".

I know, must be a telepathetic vet:p, you like that you will looooove the next one re feed:D:eek:

Urgh this thread is quite shocking. Pony is obviously pretty sick and you come here asking what is wrong, then claim vet won't come out and pony has made a miraculous recovery?

If I wasn't so concerned about this pony's welfare I'd find this quite funny. :(

No ones been nasty OP. Your 'friend' just needs to wake up and realise her responsibilities towards this animal.

I am SO sorry for causing ANY offense, please dont insure your horse. Horses never go wrong or break legs or get sick, what do vets know anyway!!

Personally I get a horse whisperer to talk to mine, he tells her where it hurts and I get the calpol out, all fixed now!!
