Advice and experiences - PTS

I am sorry to hear about your situation but it is a good idea to think about 'in advance'. I had my horse shot and for her I think it was definitely the right thing. I was there when she was PTS and it was awful to watch but it was painless and quick. I was worried that she would fight the injection but it is a really personal decision. I had mine cremated but I wasn't present when they took her away. When I have to make the decision again I think I will opt for the same, as long as the vet is in agreement.

sorry your having to make this decsion i know its hard but at least you arent gonna make your boy suffer any longer than he has to just to keep him as an 'ornament'. i had my foal PTS and she was injected the main reason for this is i couldnt bear the thought of the vet shooting her, she had already been sedated for the vet to examine her injury and she just went peacefully in my arms. i then had her sent to leyland to be cremated, although i wasnt allowed to stay with her when they loaded her, i moved her mum away at this point (just in case they needed to do anything or if i felt they were not treating her with respect) my sister and auntie stayed with coco and she was moved with dignity into the trailer. i picked up her ashes 2 days later the staff there again treat you with dignity.what ever option you choose my thoughts and hugs will be with you at this very hard time x x x xrachel

A quick reply to say thank you for all your replies which i will read through and reply later tonight when i have more time (just popped on before leaving work to go and do the boys), it really does mean a lot to me that so many have replied both with their hugs and advice and experience.

Thanks again
Jeni

I had my old pony PTS with injection last summer. It was fine. A bit distressing for me but anything would have been. The one thing I am glad about is that I had her PTS at home. The hunt collected the carcass although it took ages to get hold of them but we couldnt bury her unfortunately. I said goodbye before they loaded her as I didnt want to see that. The guy was very professional and Im sure he understood even if he thought I was a bit soppy.

The cost for pts, collection and cremation was about £400.
A small price to pay for 25 years of friendship.

If you have yours pts at home only let the horses who have been out with him see the body. The vet told me to let my mare out to "grieve" as she had been in the field next door and she was so distressed she tried to jump out of the field.

Ive never had a horse shot whilst I've been there so cant comment.

Whichever you choose it will not be easy.

I have never posted before, but would like to tell you about my mare, she was PTS after a horrible injury in her field, she was shot by a very experienced vet,it was instant although i couldnt bear to hold her while it was done,my sister took over, someone earlier posted that it leaves a hole in their head, this is untrue, all that was left was a small black mark.I really feel for you having to make this decision, just want you to know that they dont end up with a hole where the gun has been.

Amber was shot by our hunt this afternoon. She knew nothing of it and had her head in her tea. Her loan mum and I stood just round the corner for the actual deed though as I wanted my last visual memory of her to be a happy one. I know the huntsman and was quite happy for him to hols her, all she was worried about was her tea.

Rio was pts with injection by the vet when he had a twisted gut, I was much more involved but cannot wipe the picture of his body lying there with a catheter in his neck out of my head.

Both had peaceful ends but raw though it is atm I would probably chose the gun again.

One thing though please ask for support on here, it is great to feel so loved

Firstly, I am so sorry to hear this news, and you have my respect for making this hard decision for the benefit of your friend, your horse,
I had my wonderful mare shot when she had to go, aged 11 years. It was quick and clean. I would opt for this method again.
I obtained permission and had her buried on my own land.

Sorry for not replying last night like i said i would but i was a little emotional last night after going down the yard, but im a bit more calm and collected today (i hope!).

Thank you all so much for your replies and experiences it has helped me a lot to see both options etc. To those who asked me if i had spoken to the vet about it, we discussed both options a couple of months back when we went through his x-rays. My vet knows murph well and the fact that he doesn't like needles. (When i say he doesn't like them, i don't mean he just fidgets, he has picked up two people who were "trying" to hold him and marched us round the yard when trying to be sedated to look at him after he had flipped over a fence in the field and at the time would not put a leg on the floor, soon did though!. And he obv did something when went for first scans as the vet mentioned then that my horse dosen’t like needles, did warn them!). I’m just worried that if he had the bolt/shot he would move his head as he’s so nosey.

To those two posters who suggested Holts and Courtney, these are both of the people that my vets say they used, so nice in a way to know that others rate them too.

I will try to keep you all updated but can't promise, i gave Murph double dose of dannilon last night to see if it will help a bit as he can't even stand peacefully as has to constantly move his weight so not nice to see him like this - hence the emotional overload.

Sorry to ramble!

Thank you so much
Jeni

Holts are good, I used the Puckeridge hunt yesterday, they were lovely too, fitting end for a mare that loved to hunt, she will run on in the hounds. They will go a little out of their area too so depending on where you are they could be an option.

Cambridgshire do not have a winch so you need to deliver the horse to the kennels.

Not sure about the Oakley.

With Holts you have 3 options, Disposal (cheapest) group cremation or indiv cremation with the option of having the ashes returned, (£500 plus) we chose this for Rio whose ashes are buried under a Liriodendron tree, we call it the little Rio tree. We chose this for him as he was the kids pony, less traumatic for them that the hunt, although IMO what is left is an empty body as the soul leaves immediately.

Any questions feel free to PM me.
