horse was lame for a week after being shod, sound for a day then crippled lame, ended up having an abcess, polticed for nearly 2 weeks, got shoe back on still lame after 3 days so vet back out. shoe off to see if another abcess.
polticed for another week, nothing. shoe back on on friday, very slighty lame on a the straight, very flat ground.
lmae on a circle soft and hard ground..

vet is up tomorrow or tuesday. i hate keeping him in as hes been in on box rest for nearly a year due to this problem. and owner is now talking about having him put down so i want to give him some time out before he goes. but putting him out tonight have i done more damage than good?

i feel bad for keeping him in and i feel bad for putting him out because i dont know if im making it worse... what would you do?

Not a professional in this but with the ground being really soft (it is our way), and there is no pus in foot may do him/her good to walk around outside? No heat in leg/tendons? or digital pulse, then would be happier out than in - try some arnica tablets (my horse kicked this week and he is sound even though has lump on leg the size of an egg) but if I kept him in would box walk on own and be really unhappy. Hope you get him/her well asap as pts is really sad situation. Good luck!

I think you've don the right thing, horse only slightly lame now so will do it good to wander around (so long as doesn't go crazy!) Good for circulation to help heal whatever is wrong with it. Also psychologically beneficial and some horses come sound with turnout. I hope the horse is ok, don't feel bad, you are only trying to do your best.

thank you, your comments are really help full, i didnt think of if it actually helpng him in a way.

not been going to mad because iv given him a few ACP so hes had a canter but stopped as soon as he gets to his girlfriend!

If we have horses on the yard that we suspect have an abcess we poulitice for a few days only - and then if the ground is wet we get them out, as the moisture will help naturally draw out the infection.

Having a horse PTS for poor feet is a bit off the scale IMO.
Poulticing for too long is detrimental if a horse is prone to absesses, it draws all the moisture out of the feet and makes them softer.
If he was mine I would take the shoes of and turn him out for 3 months min.
We have a lot of new horses like this, if you turn them away and leave them to get on with it they will come in with perfect, hard feet.

there is no way he come spend 3 days without shoes on, let alone 3 months, he has collasped heals. and the vet has comfired he may never recover from it

i was told by the vet to poltice for such a long time.
