Hi all, I have a friesian x (meant to be tb but looks like cob) who is rising 3. He stands at 15.2hh and is HUGE! Now I don't know much about this breed but wondered when to start backing him. He is way to immature I think at present as is still croup high and growing but god he is a strong one! Was thinking about doing groundwork this summer with a view to backing in Autumn. Just wondered when Friesians generally mature as don't want to do it too early. Are they a slow maturing breed?

Hi there, I'm not an expert at all on Friesian horses however I do believe they are indeed a slow maturing breed.

Anyway, every horse is different and if you feel that yours is not ready yet, why not play safe and wait a little longer

Of course ground work will give him good preparation for the real work!

Good luck!

They are a slow maturing breed as far as I know. I would personally wait until the he level, do some light backing and then turn him away to mature a bit more and then reback him.

I would also start to do some long-reining and lunging and stuff now before he's backed as it will help when you finally come to sit on him.

What a lucky friesian x to have you!
The friesians I have known have been imported at 2 and the poor things have already been backed......and they are def slow maturing!

enjoy the baby days with him and by the time you do back him he'll be itching to get on with it!

hi i own a full friesian who is in foal and the do take quite a long time to mature but with any horse i would consentrate on groundwork longreining etc but not lunging yet due to bones still growing but do road work and longreining on roads then gentle back him ride him gentle then turn him out to fully mature

My dressage trainer imports friesians and she usually does groung worrk and starts a bit of riding in the summer when they turn 3 and then turns them away over the winter and starts bringing them back in during spring, but in NL they all seem to be broken at 2YO
