Advice for a first time clipper owner

I have decided to buy a set of Liveryman Harmony Plus clippers, they come with one set of blades, Wide medium blades.

I would like to get a second set of blades, but what would be most useful? A second pair the same so that I have a back up if they go blunt that cut the same or would I be better getting something different to make my clippers more useful?

I will generally just be clipping my own fine coated horse. I might do one for a friend but no cob feathers or anything.

I have a pair of liveryman element trimmers for fiddly bits, so don't need to worry too much about that.

Any recommendations of the best place to buy competitively priced blades appreciated too!

Oh and another question while I am here, what sort of oil do I need to buy when the tiny bottle that comes with them runs out? Do I need to get special clipper oil or will normal oil do?

I would get a set of the same blades you have if they go blunt you can just put the other set and carry on at least it will look the same.

Go online and look for blades they do vary in price, you must use oil meant for clippers, you can get another bottle from liveryman they will sell the oil seperately or just some from your local tack shop will do.

So the ones that come with the clippers will cut to close for a normal clip and I need to get some that leave about 2mm.

Will look at the masterclip blades thanks.
 
Have ordered one set of the masterclip blades. I will order a second pair as a spare at some point. I also ordered some oil from masterclip as delivery is free.
 
It is my suggestion that there are 2 problems here.
Firstly, liveryman harmony clippers are really trimmers. The clipper itself 'may' be powerful enough to clip a horse (slowly) but you are asking allot of a wide A5 blade to clip a whole horse. To further this point, even reputable clippers like Wahl Moser Max 45 (much better than a liveryman harmony) put a wide blade (same thing as an out and out dog blade but has wider teeth) on a dog clipper and re-brand it as a their 'horse clipper'. I feel it is tongue in cheek to glorify a good dog clipper and call it a horse clipper.
Secondly, point one but even more so when it is made by Masterclip. Masterclip blades are great for the price. But phone them up and tell them they stopped clipping after one horse and they will tell you they need resharpening. They do not service/sharpen any of their own blades, they are an import company, not an experience clipping equipment manufacturer. They can advise you where to get them sharpened but do not expect you to get much work out of a set. I would advise at least a moser wide or an oster.
Buy cheap, buy twice comes to mind. As above, they are great for the price, but you should not expect too much from them. ;-)
 
Luckily a glorified dog trimmer is exactly what I want. I have had her clipped by a pro and they couldn't get near her with their good clippers and had to use the small cordless ones.

If I could use heavy duty clippers on her I would probably use a pro rather than buying my own. As it is the plan is to clip little and often so she gets used to it and the clippers don't have to work too hard. That would be too pricey with a pro. It doesn't take many clips for these cheaper clippers to have made back their cost.

I take your point on the blades though and will look elsewhere to buy my next set. Can you recommend any?
 
I'm almost certain that all wide (proper name size 10 wide) blades are 1.6mm. You can find blades at standard width blades that cut 1.6mm (size 10), 2.8mm (size 8.5) and 3.4mm (size 7 or 7F)

Oster 10 Wide
Wahl 10 Wide
Moser 10 Wide
Liveryman 10 Wide

Moser Wide (Wahl sell their stuff worldwide, using different names - one of which being Moser.) and Liveryman 10 Wide area both marketed as horse blades. Oster and Wahl (wahl also sell some slightly different stuff under the name 'Wahl') wide blades are no different quality wise and will also do the job fine.

There are many other 'brands' (or names given to faceless imports) that 'MAY' do the job but if you have chosen that clipper/blade type then the above are the best you can get.

Wahl sell 'clipper oil' in a small drip can (with the wahl kits) - it is pure white mineral oil, so anywhere you can get that is fine. Lister is a subsidiary of Wahl and they also sell oil in a drip can - I'm pretty sure this is the same thing. You can get all manor of oils, some highly specialized to be horse skin friendly and whatever other USP's companies can find to make their product 'the one to buy' I would recommend any drip can type, 3 in 1 will do the job for you. Don't use aerosols - could go into a detailed response as to why but for now, just dont!

How do you get a competitively priced blade? No idea! there are so many different ways of describing a blade, you will never scan the whole market quickly. Google shopping, ebay, and amazon are all price comparison sites (in effect) so try them. I would pick a brand and go for it, pick one you know or someone recommends, it's pot luck buying cheap imports from some faceless copycat. I would suggest that buying cheap often means buying twice in the clipper/blade game.
