Friend has just bought a young anglo arab colt (will be gelded before he comes to yard whilst hes at present home then month or two after that move to yard ).We were talking about feed'Now I'm not sure about feed re youngsters but friend is very much more is better.Have said I think she'd have to watch re that as too much not good in youngster but what and how much should you feed a 7/8 month old .
He is expected to mature at 15.3/16hh.
Thanks

oh thanks thats a good idea.like the idea of freebies!!
Should have one of those baby packs(voucher, free stuff etc) you used to get when you left hospital with baby!!

Mine was on stud mix (fed at the recommended amount), alfa a, and sugar beet with ad lib haylage. But i agree, it's very useful to speak with some of the feed suppliers...i spoke with someone from Dodson & Horrell and someone from Baileys.

It would be an idea for her to ask the breeder what he has been on since weaning and keep to the same for at least a month when he has moved to her. It's very similar to a new puppy; it is bad enough moving homes away from all that he knows without the upset of changing his diet straight away too. Far better to let him get settled in with at least the same food until he is well settled. You might find he is doing well on that anyway but there's nothing to stop her asking feed firms for their advice too in the meantime.
I hope we'll get pic's!

her best bet is to ring round all the food suppliers, they have experts on feeding regimes for babies and you may even get some free samples

And get even more confused by all the different advise and suggestions!!!

Stick with what the youngster has been fed on, if thats not working go to the manufacturers of that feed and ask them..... only start changing things if you really need to!

Better advice would be to contact the stud and ask their stud manager what he/she recommends for your foal as a weanling, yearling and 2yo feedwise..and feed plenty of quality hay/haylage too.
When my two youngsters were young, I got some excellent advice from a very experienced stud manager I happened to know...she was never wrong...about anything.

My two foals are on spillers youngstock mix with aplha a and ad-lib haylage.

They are a good weight and are growing well with it. Its what i had their mummies on when they were expecting them.

Thanks for all replies they are very helpful.
will reccomend she talks to breeder first.
This is friends first youngster so she wants to do it right .He is such a great nature so don't want anything to go wrong.

My 7 month old colt is on Hi-Fi and cool mix and haylege twice a day. I might get speedi beet if him or the other 2 drop any weight which I cant see happening in a hurry!!
