As some may know Bud hit water fence at Aston last May chipped his stifle, luckly all fixed and back in work now took him out yesterday for first comp just unaf sj and did 2 double clears even with me riding like a pleb! need to pull it together for affiliated next sunday!

So just wanted peoples advice on eventing him this season.... he did a few pn 05 then did 1 pn, Bradwall N then Aston N last yr. i hope to bsja disc and 1m classes from now on and hopefully some unaf dressage....

I was thinking about doing 3 pn runs see how it goes and then maybe do a novice, trouble is how it falls would mean Bradwall would be my first one again and last yr i thought it was blooming huge - even though he took them all on and only hesitated at the drop into water it was big..... or was it ??anybody any views on how it compares to other novices now adays or does anyone know of 'nice' novice tracks early on in the season.....

any words of wisdom gratefully recieved - i just pray he comes back as brave and bold and doesn't remember pain into water! do they remember things like that?? he wasn't 100% before..... i will def do as much xc schooling as i can lots water jumps and hopefully go for a lesson at Aston - not sure i will be able to face my demons at the fence we hit though!

Can't help with the events, as not from round your way!

But with the stifle, i was just take it as you feel it, don't go out thinking you've got to do loads, but just see how he feels the first time, then take it from there!
Our horse did his stifle, and came out again the next sason at the same level he finished at when he did it! (ie not starting off down a grade) and took it all fine.

(i know each horse is different, but just an idea for you)

good advice i am def going to take it all how it comes, and interesting to hear about another stifle sufferer.... Bud is only 7 this time and relitively inexperienced and as i haven't done anything much for a while and rode like a pleb yesterday think it safe to atempt pn firstly but i know he would go straight novice if i asked him - as there are 3 pn on our doorstep thought it best to take advantage! or i might have just done 1-2, and you never know if they will go ahead with weather!! good point though dropping down a level i need to pull myself together and gain some confidence in both of us!

that's very true, he did take them all on first time and they are just big fences not too technical and hopefully if they have option to side of the water again i can go straight for that this time! it is a nice course i just needs some guts implanting into me!! thanks for that

Sounds like you have a good plan, i would try some 1.10 BSJA before the season as well.

And South of England is a great Novice, good 1st time one, so would be good but a bit too far for you maybe.

Also Keysoe is a good one. And Milton Keynes can be but can also be quite big depending really.

Good luck for the season!

yeah good plan, i'd just started doing Newcomers before the accident so will work upto that height just got to build up to it!!! bulk purchase of rescue remedy needed me thinks!!

110 BSJA always seems so much worse than BE Novice - think it is the indoors thing.

Goring is a nice old fashioned Novice (big but inviting).

Keysoe is straightforward XC but the SJ can be tricky.

Lex will probably go up to Novice at one of those two.

I disagree! But then I think I was real unlucky thatthe Novices I did last year the SJ was well up to height!!!

The 1.10 BSJA's ive done have seemed much smaller! Spose it depends on the venue!

Have any of your local Pony/Riding clubs got any unaffiliated events on around then because they sometimes have open sections which you could compete in if you were worried about Bradwall being a bit to big for your first event.

If it's the water you're worried about principally this was Goring's at their second event this year: (there was an alternatibe too).

cullohill.....Don't worry about it to much, enter the pre novices you wanna do and then if he finds it all easy you can always ask the organisers if you can upgrade to the novice and you are not the only one eventing that needs guts, i've been showjumping for 19 yrs and last season was my first eventing although i've groomed at a few internationals and trained a few juniors, but if you said i didn't have to go xc in the start box i'd get off! i've still managed to get placed everytime out, just take it all in your stride your horse sounds genuine and if you do it all together it will all fall into place, Enjoy.

thanks thats brilliant to see, that looks ok to me it's just the drop in i'd have to ride harder at he just worries slightly and needs to have confidence built up again - but its great to see what it might look like!!

mmm its silly i've been round Belton Weston and Catton intermediate tracks and done 1* in Ireland all mahoosive but with my gorgeous girly who i just had the best relationship with, just got to build me and my boy up now and will take time i know need to get out more but its hard with one working full time and no facilities!!!!
thank you i will pull it together and enjoy he is super talented and more than capable!

very true on my doorstep, yes they are building a novice track not sure how they're going to fit it in on the land they have though..... buts it's later on in the season but will def try and aim to do it as i hopefully will have trained round it many times!!!!
