daughters mare gets in a real tizz if horses pass us out hacking.we knew when we bought her that she likes to be in front in a group and when we take her to pony club rallies and competing she can get worked up if its busy but once working will settle down.today out for a quiet afternoon hack another horse passed us in trot.we then proceeded to complete the hack prancing, side stepping cantering on the spot and jogging the whole way round.she is a lovley mare and i accept this may be the way she is.shes highland x tb and can be a bit stressy in new situations.any advice please.i was on my warmblood mare who is normally calm and sensible but this didnt seem to make any difference

I've got a horse just like that & my old horse was the same when she was in work; it depends on the individual but in my experience there's not a lot you can do about it, she is what she is.
I just let her stay in front (she walks so fast nobody can keep up with us, so we're always in front anyway) & if somebody is coming up behind us I either put up with the jumping up & down or get a move on so nobody overtakes us.
We do fun rides at a flat out pace, so we trot, canter or gallup the whole way, very tiring for me but she's still full of it when we get back. We over take lots of people but nobody over takes us, so I spend the whole time shouting "alright to come past?" & "thankyou" as we bound past!
I would say enjoy her for who she is & if it's safe to do so kick on when she starts jumping around; she can't bounce up & down as much if she moving forward at good pace.
Have you got any pictures? Highland x tb sounds like a super cross.

Is there any way you could work her regularly in a group out hacking. If it were me I would take her out in a group putting her in front and behind as well as in the middle and initially just stick to walk hacks, then once she is able to do that calmly introduce trot work and again only allow her to trot if she is calm. I would also work on getting her out with another horse and allowing the other horse to not only go in front but in different directions to her so she learns that it is normal for other horses to be around but she is expected to listen to her rider. I wouldn't allow her to canter at all in company until she is calm in the previous situations and then insist she stays behind when cantering with firstly one horse and then a second horse as well.

Let her go in front to begin with then bring your other horse up beside her for awhile and then let her drop back for a few strides, takes a little time and determination but it works. my old cob in the end didn't mind if he went first or last, till he went hunting and that's another story.

Agree with both spike and John. If I have a horse that does this I start with me halting while other horse walks a few strides past us. by starting in halt I feel you are really starting at the beginning, then if she is calm walk her to catch up calmly and repeat it over and over until she thinks nothing of another horse walking past. You know the rest Really does work as long as you are firm, fair and 100% consistant
