Advice for infectio/virus please

Yes he is insured but as usual with insurance it doesnt give you as much cover as you may think! I thought we had max vet fees 5750 but apparently 1100 of this is for vet referred treatments such as accupuncture, physiotherapy etc?? So actually only 4600 is ours. Then I find out anything over 1000 means we have to pay excess of 17.5%!! Great, i thought excess was 145, smallprint eh, dont you love it!! I am hoping to get a second claim for the ulcer treatment as all the vets have been sure the ulcers wouldnt have caused the illness. We will see how that goes in due course. Vets bill before he even went to RVC was 1000, so its all looking good lol.Thank god for credit cards! Andy still doing well this morning. No temp and bright and well. Teeth grinding is lessening too. They now deciding whether to stop abs and see how he copes. Scary and seems so fragile, but I am praying he stays well. I so want to bring my boy home and spoil him rotten!!

This virus seems rife this year with the same symptoms as your horse, definitely iv for bute and ab's, sadly i have heard of a few that have not survived with it, advise encourage eating, iv's and keep warm, good luck.

Hey Putasocinit, that is the first I have heard of a virus being to blame for my boys symptoms. What experience do you have with this virus please. I am obviously interested in any information I can gather as none of the vets have really factioned in a virus apart from the obvious strangles and even equine infectious anaemia? They all seemed to report that a virus wouldnt give a horse such a high fever and also for as long as he had it. Maybe 2 or 3 days at most. I havent been told they are dealing with a virus with similar symptoms in the area. On the bright side he is good again today temp down and bloods show his inflammation markers are decreasing which his vet says is excellent news. Plan is to take him off abs tomorrow and see how he copes for a couple of days. Please any infor for other cases like mine greatfully received.

Hi, I had a 2 year old collapse showing severe ataxia, very very high temperature and colic symptoms (about twice a week, resolved with bute but vet unable to find cause even though he did this for nearly a month) , he lost weight so we took to vets to use the weighbridge as they suggested drug resistant worms so we wanted the correct dose. When home he wandered up the field grazing slowly and I found him unconscious 10 minutes later. The vet nearly couldnt rouse him ( ended up stabbing him with a pair of scissors to get a reaction !!) He had all the neurological tests etc on the spot, was too weak to be travelled so she took bloods. They showed severe stomach/ liver issues so we gave antibiotics and steroids and camped at the yard. He was down about 2 weeks ( we picked him up up eat and pee etc but a TB is quite heavy). Eventually he went to the vets to do an intestinal tap and stomach fluid was clear. They still don't know what the cause was or even whether the treatment helped. Vet reckons feeding him every 2 hours was probably more beneficial. They were suprised he survived, let alone that he is starting to event this season, no long term issues at all.

High temp, not eating, swollen lymph nodes, one minute snotty nose then the next sweating as if colicky, breathing heavily, animal is pyrexic, its got to be a virus of some sort doing its rounds, would say it was due to the severe weather but who can be sure. If the vets could give it a name we would know what it is.

Ok well the symptoms are very similar except no snotty nose. Pyrexia followed by sweating when the temp dropped, swollen lymph nodes and one day of low grade colic! Who knows its horrible but the vets cant really say what it is. They are thinking bacterial because the antibiotics seemd to be working in lowering his temp and his inflammation markers. It may always remain a mystery I guess. Went to visit him today and he was super grumpy. This is much more like his usual self lol. He is cross with me I could tell, I so wanted to be able to bring him home and spoil him. The antibiotics have been stopped so next 48 hrs will tell if he becomes pyrexic again we have a problem. Cant tell you how anxious I feel, as if my life depends upon his temperature!! I am keeping everything crossed for him. Feel a bit down tonight as it still seems so uncertain and I cant help feel there is something we havent found yet. It seems a long shot to ever get my beautiful boy back the way he used to be.
