Advice for loaning please

Ok then. I've advertised ponio and had a deluge of 30+ phone calls and emails in just 24hrs. (as someone on here suggested I would).
I have 3 possibly 4 people coming to view him at the weekend.
TBH I'm feeling a bit out of my depth as I've never done this before. He will definately be leaving the yard as we have nowhere to keep him here.

The people that are coming seem to be the type of people I want to loan him, they would all be keeping him at home like he's used to, they all have more than one child so if it works out he could be settled there for a while and they are all within a reasonable radius of where he currently is.

Please can you advise pitfalls to be aware of, should I be asking for references??? I have printed off the BHS loan agreement - will that be sufficiant?

when i loaned mine out i taylored the bhs loan agreement to fit my situation and i would think that was sufficiant, i think it would be a good idea to ask for references and maybe a vet report/bill kind of thing even if its not for a horse to show that they do take care of their animals, when i eventually loaned my horse out the day they came to pick her up i also asked for some form of ID and had their car registration number but i am one of those people that panik lol but so far so good

Get references, go and visit where he will be living, talk to the people.
Establish a method of communication and how often you would like updates.
I used the BHS loan agreement and modified it to fit.

Presume you will be checking out where he'll be going? I'm sure most loans go without a hitch but I would be checking them out, asking questions about them locally, seeing if they are known to police, how long they have lived there. I know it's intense but if they have nothing to hide they won't mind.

Thanks all. How did you make sure they had relevent insurance in place. Do I ask for a copy of the docs.
My OH keeps saying 'you mean you're handing over 3K worth of pony, plus englsh tack and rugs to a complete stranger!!!'
Its not filling me with much confidence.

I have heard of many ponies which have been put out on loan and then sold as the people who put them on loan never went to check out where they would be living. I would suggest that you go and visit where they live ask for references and ask to see some elect/gas/rate bills, see if they own their house or is it rented. If rented, just be alittle more concerned. I have had e-mails from the pony club advising to be careful.

Get a contract written up (the BHS one is good) and take photos of him in all seasons. Take a photocopy of his passport. Keep all documents together, get witnesses to sign the contract. Stipulate that you WILL visit the pony regularly, and will also require regular emails and phonecalls, plus photos of the pony every month or two.

is he microchipped?? that can be worth doing and all the details stay in your name, one of mine is on loan, i also wrote into the agreement that he was to be fully insured and that i must have a copy,

ask for a home address and the yard address and when the whitness signs also ask for an address,

loan horses being sold happens far to much, you just can be to careful, if the people are genuine they wont mind, also get people to come and try the pony more than once, make a cup of tea ect, the more time you spend with poeple the more chance of have of getting to know them a liitle.
