I have always been a confident rider up until recently
I had about 6months off riding and came back at Christmas

Basically started riding on 26th December most days, had 3 falls, the 3rd being quite a bad one cracking my ribs. Backs starting to feel a bit better now.
I got on last week, lunged first for 10mins and my horse immediately bronked round the school trying to get me off. Really out of character hes never bucked in his life ive owned him since a 3 year old and backed him myself.
After 3 laps of this and managing to stay on i got off as my back was really painfull and to be completely honest i was a bit scared

Due to snow he hasnt been ridden since

Now my back if feeling much better, hes having his back done on Thursday and teeth checked. I want a plan of action for when i get back on
How would you go about it? and avoid being bronked?!

Thanks in advance

PS i will add he moved yards at Christmas, i hacked out schooled etc that week before the fall with no probs really apart from a few unlucky falls

I would also look at the saddle fit. We have one who behaves like this in reaction to the saddle if its out just a bit.
You say you have moved yards, has much changed in routine etc?
Is there anything else you can ride, to get your confidence back, or possibly look at getting someone else to sit on him a few times.
My OH always wears a body protector, he finds it helps his confidence no end.
I alway lunge if have a fresh one, and one of ours will be just lunged for several days post a break prior to getting back on as she is prone to broncing.
Howver, as it sounds really out of character, if you have covered the basics, your nerves etc and it continues, I would ring the vet.

This does really sound pain related if it is completely out of character. I would get him thoroughly checked out head to toe, not just his back. Saddle & teeth also.

If you find that back, saddle etc are OK I would get an experienced confident person to get on and ride your horse a few times. You are bound to be feeling a bit nervous after what you've been through and horses pick up on nerves so quickly. He won't be used to this feeling from his normally confident owner so he might have panicked.

In the meantime why don't you have some lunge lessons on a nice steady horse to help get you get riding fit and increase your core strength. Feeling scared is your body's way of telling you that it's not quite ready to plunge back into riding, so some lessons will help.

Good luck

I bought one of the little straps that attaches to the d-rings to give me a bit of extra confidence. I could hang on to it if I thought mine was going bronc. It made me sit more upright and stopped from hanging onto the reins.
