hi i have brought my horse some magnesium oxide as i read it is a good calmer on it . it says feeding rate 2g per 100kg bodyweight i have got a heavy cob could anyone recommened how much i should give her and is it something you can give every day or just certain times of year?please any advice?

I would suggest 10-12grms should be plenty (assuming typical weight of 500-600kgs and assuming you have looked into the point raised by Black_Horse?

i read that it can help overweight horses and ones that are abit over excited so i just thought i would see if it could help with her being over sensitive about things

i suggest switching to a high fibre, low sugar and low carbohydrate diet if your horse is overweight and sensitive, the low glycimic rush after feeding should result in a calmer horse...

shes just been acting out of character and a post on here said about the grass lacking magnesium,i thought this might help as she has been very spooky lately and had me off a couple of weeks ago which is not like her

i would perhaps say that the grass is high in sugar and fructose levels at this time of year and she is reacting to that, limiting the grazing will help better than feeding magnesium, as magnesium will have a limited effect if dietry sugar levels are still high.

im not sure i was only thinking of using it as she has got very sensitive and nervous latly and i dont know why it was just an idea as i have had a vet out and he couldnt find anything all he did was check if she was lame i am just not sure if magnesium is any good or not

Thats correct, spring grass is lacking magnesium, which combined with the extra sugar can cause silliness. The dose you quoted is correct, 2g per 10kg of BW. It doesnt look alot but thats right, its under a small blue measure found in most supplements. Magnesium helps the nervous system function correctly but will only help if the body needs it. Worth a try

ETA- 10g is just under a small blue measure

Magnesium can help to balance spring grass, however you can help yourself to an extent by limiting access to grass, ensuring your horse is not receiving too much energy from grass and continuing to give a broad spectrum vit/min.

If you still wish to add magnesium to the feed, I would start with 1 teaspoon a day assuming your horse is 500kg or so

I give my mare 5g a day of Equine America magnitude as she was starting to be difficult when she came into season this year. She weighs about 560kg. The recommeded dosage of that is 5g a day anyway. I think it is a good calmer and I made sure she isnt getting too much as she is on a couple other supplements too.
