Advice /help re lump

Just come in from grooming JB and have noticed a lump in gland area at the top of the trachea or is it the windpipe in front can never remember. You can move the lump slightly similar to our own glands when they are swollen. But there is only a lump on his left side. Any idea's. Do you think it's just a swollen gland or any other idea's? It doesn't seem to bother him. But he seems a bit lethargic. His motion is not upto normal count in last few days. But I put this down to the grass coming through and so he's never that bothered with the hayledge when this happens. We did move himback to his old field which he hasn't been on since before xmas.
 
Is there anybody there?

Well at least you answered thank you Eaglestone I think its just a swollen gland from change of grass. But I'll keep an eye on it over the weekend.
 
Actually that would have been the only answer I could have given you as my friend's horse always ends up with 'hamster cheeks' (as she calls them) when the grass comes through

Hi Flowerlady. Weird. My experience of grass glands is that they appear higher up on the side of the horse's jaw. About where we'd get mumps. So a lump on the front of the windpipe doesn't sound like salivary glands. But I think their mouths - like ours - are full of various salivary glands so maybe its just on oddly sited one. Has he had it before in the spring? I'd keep an eye on it and if he still seems off colour it wouldn't hurt to get it checked out for reassurance. Hope its nothing! x
 
Thanks for your reply. No he hasn't had it before on its not on the front of the windpipe its at the side like when we have swollen glands at the top of our neck so to speak. My other horse once had both glands swollen when he was suffering from an infection and had snotty nose. JB doesn't have any other symptoms. Tried to look up in our Vet book can't find anything so OH said ask the forum.

My friends horses had it and it came up when she brought them in at night when the grass was scarce .The vet told her it was the salivary glands and they were anticipating their last feed.Sounds like the same place from your description.There was another post same symptoms earlier this week I believe so could be the grass.
 
The only thing I would be aware of is Strangles, the fact that hes been and has gone off his good sets alarm bells ringing for me... I would keep a very close eye on him/call the vet and ask for advice do you have a themometer at all? If so, grab his temperature, a rise in temperature is often the first sign of an infection.
 
My cob gets this and the vet said not to worry, she comes in at night with them but they are gone by morning, its always when there is not much grass. Some times the swellings go right upto her ears.
