My 25 year old PBA gelding is suffering from what is in effect foot rot of the frogs, due to the sodding wet weather. Farrier has been out and cut back all the nasty smelly bits from his frogs, leaving him very sore (the pony not the farrier! LOL!). I have him stabled (although we are lucky as barely any mud as on top of a hill and very well drained), he is on a deep bed of dry straw, I am cleaning his feet twice a day with warm salt water and purple spray.
Anybody got any tips to help?
I know that peroxide will kill the thrush, but his frogs are too sore to apply anything like that at the moment, don't even want to use the foot dressing that I have in stock from the vet! Looking for a more gentle approach as Mate is not good with pain (he is a notorious wimp!) plus he is an old man at the end of the day, and my very precious friend as I have had him from the moment his feet touched the floor!!!
