Morning all, went down to horses as normal this morn to check the horses. They get carrots in the morning and haylage. Went into the field they are divided by electric fence and my horse is fenced away from the gate to stop a mud bath in the gateway. So I was in the gateway bit and let him put his head in the bucket to get a carrot to keep him occupied whilst I turned the fence off, then I climbed under the fence and he was being pushy which is not him at all so I pushed him away and told him to wait whilst I put his bucket down the cheeky monkey turned his bum on me and kicked out whilst running away. I had a shock he did this as its not like him at all. I shouted at him and moved him away from me. I gave the horse next to him his bucket first whilst my horse just looked at me as if to say whoops and i made him stay away whilst I placed his bucket on the floor and made him stand where he was until I was ready for him to come to me and have his bucket. Maybe it was my fault for letting him have a carrot from the bucket before going into him as I dont normally do that. Any advice on what to do with him as I dont want him to become a cheeky horse and think he can get away with it! Thanks in advance and sorry to ramble on, I hope this works as its the 1st time I have used my mobile to post x

Simple answer and you've given it - FOOD!

If you tease a horse about food by giving some then making wait you are nearly always going to get problems! And with other horses about I wouldn't even think about getting between them - if he's hungry he will forget and just go with instinct which is to eat!

But he and the other are separated, he normally gets his bucket first and the other gets his over the fence second a few seconds later. I wouldn't normally let him go near the bucket whilst I am not in the field but he can be a pain whilst I am trying to turn the fence off usually one of us ends up with a shock and most often its me! I dont know why I let him have a carrot from his bucket this morn - note to self dont do it again.
