Hey just looking for a bit advice. Will try and keep this short -

I have 2 whippets and bf has an American Akita. My little whipplets get a predomintly raw diet but I do keep them on a small amount of kibble as well. they currently get wainwrights and the Akita was on Beta large breed puppy as that's the food that came from the breeder but on doing research it isn't really the best of dry food.

So we were looking to put all dogs onto ACANA as it seems one of the best kibble (as stated my whippets get limited kibble but I do like to keep them on it a bit) and we were hoping to have them all on the same (Akita isn't keen on raw though I do add meat to her diet where I can)

Can they all go on the same ACANA provided we provide the akita with other means of getting the oild etc for her joints as as far as I can see this is the main difference between regular kibble and "large breed" or is the better to be kept on a large breed variety? It is more for convenience to have them on the same but we want to do the best for the dogs so happy to continue with 2 different if necessary!

Akita is only 1ye 4 months and I have actually read some articles stating that they shouldn't be on puppy large breed too long as it forces them to grow too quick and puts extra pressure on their joint...

Any help would be appreciated!

When I had my two large breed dogs ( rott and ddb mastiff) I switched to adult food at six months..rott got to 42 kg ,ddb. To 52 kg and both girls were lovely well muscled dogs. I did the same with all my st poodles ...all dogs grow slowly and get to good ht and wt without joint issues caused by over rapid growth.
We gave the dogs the odd sardine in oil, ricotta cheese..veggies ,fish and meat....never used calcium supplements , and none had arthritis.

I did try both arcana and Origen but found it too high in protein and it also made the dogs loose.
Re food Choices the dog food advisor site is excellent..and I will leave the others here to recommend their choices as I'm abroad and can't get all your food.
We do like Fromm, farmina n and d( currently using for my st poodle and my mini schnauzer) .

Thanks very much I appreciate it! BF's mum has rottie and she has terrible problems with her joints etc. She is a particularly large rottie!

The whippets get sardines etc as part of their diet and I always try to make sure the akita gets them too (though she is fussier about what she eats) so I will be sure to make sure she continues to get these to help her joints.

Country gal..I met a beautiful, young, American Akita female just the other day...but it was so rigid on its legs..I enquired, and they told me that both patellas were grade three luxating and it's a huge problem in the breed..of course their breeder had not tested for this in the parents...
So slow and steady with the excercise as well...until 14 months is always Amber light!!

Thank you! I tend not to let her off the lead as she can be a bit unpredictable (and she tried to keep up with the zooming whippets which isn't good for her) She is the first experience I have had with an Akita so I really do appreciate any help, hints tips etc. I certainly did know about the above. My bf knows more than me but he had to learn quick too as she was a rescue. She was going to be drowned as she is partially blind so he more or less went straight and got her. He is used to large breeds having been brought up with rotties but an akita is certainly a unique dog! She is brilliant though I wouldn't change her. She drived my bf mad lol but he absolutely adores her! We had to put her in the kennels to go on holiday and I noted a little tear in his eye as we left her!

good for you to adopt her..is she Japanese type or American? I believe they are quite different in temperament. They were very popular here( Japanese type) a few years ago ,my friend has had two...wonderful dogs but definitely not for a beginner.

She is an American Akita so yes, slightly different from Japanese. She is a great girl really and generally very well behaved for such a young dog! Its her stubbornness I struggle with lol. The whippets are so reactive, the tiniest noise/instruction and they come straight to you whereas Hope listens in her own time....!

You could add chicken feet. They're a really good source for glucosamine. I own 2 rotties, raw fed but always aware of protecting their joints.

Millie Wolfheart is a really high quality kibble, it's suitable for all ages and comes in lots of varieties, protein % etc.

It's sent by parcel carrier, they also do smaller trial amounts.
