Can anyone offer any advice??? My horse has strained his check ligament and has been on box rest for three months. He has been having 5 minute walk outs for the last week but today decided to be silly and broke away from me bucking and rearing across the sand school - he then trotted around several times before letting me take him back to his box. I am now really worried that he will have damaged the ligament again and I will have to start from square one again?Does anyone know if this will have damaged him further. What should I do???? Call the vet out again or continue to walk him out?

My horse did his curb last sept and I had the same problem. After 3 months he should have made enough progress and had enough healing time. Can you phone your vet just for a chat Im sure he hasnt set himself back after all the rest hes had. When are you having your next scan.

in six weeks - just worried as it felt quite warm again. gave himsome bute to try to take the edge off. I will call vet tomorrow. probably worrying about nothing! hope so anyway

You might find using a lunge line better for walking at least if he breaks away you still have something inhand.I was riding by 3 months just gentle walks round the block to keep him sane.We also did restricted turnout 12 by 10 paddock to help with the boredom and for company. At the end of the recovery period I had a course of injections to help build up cartlidge and aid ligament cant remember what they were called but within 3 weeks he had made significant improvement.Hope his helps

Know how you are feeling got my horse back on track in June then he bruised his cannon bone had 6 weeks rest now he has damaged his tendon being stupid in the paddock.Im back to last year again!!!!!!!!!!

oh no! sorry to hear that. I'm sure there are loads of us in the same boat.

I think I will use a lunge line as suggested. Don't know why i did'nt. i think it's because I walked him around yard before and he did'nt do anything but when in the school he thought hey hey!! time for work. He does love his work. just feel so sorry for him. will ask the vet if he can go in a small paddock when i ring them. sure he would be happier.

When he gets tired of the small paddock try making a link between about 5 paddocks all small a bit like a maze so he cant run straight through them .It has helped keep my horse sane he has to work out how to get in the next field for grass but cant get up any speed. You just need loads of tape.My vet said it was a brilliant idea.It also helps with any swelling in initial stages and builds up fitness slowly.good luck I just hope this is the last of the injuries so I can enjoy my jumping again next year.
Dont know if you have heard of parelli but its kept my horse very grounded normally he is a complete fruit loop the ground excercises make them really think and you can do a lot in walk.

have heard of it but it's having the time a guess...have quite a demanding job..

love the maze idea - not sure if the yard owner would go for it though. I tried hanging a turnip up inside his stable but he just ignored it. also tried putting apples in his water but he became really frustrated and just kept drinking loads - maybe trying to empty the bucket so he could get them... hes so clever you know.

I also can't wait to get jumping again - i'm only really starting out. my horse is far more experienced than me even though he's only 9. I've been riding most of my life but just hacked out before i bought my horse. really would like to try competing. just started to get him going nicely when he did his ligament - bit of a bugger really.

Sounds like you are in the same place as I was last year .Always ridden bought my first horse must be mad he was 4yrs tb ex racer and had to be completely reschooled.I think most of his injuries were down to immaturity. His not mine!!!!!!!!Did my first competion this year was thrilled to bits then he injures himself again ,such is life.Probably get him right then my daughter will try and steal him for pony club .She is getting more experience on her loaned pony in six months than I have in two years.
Have you tried a decahedron - its a toy you put feed or carrots in they have to push it around the stable to get the food out my horse keeps all his mates awake allnight with his .
