Hi all, my mother want to rehome the Shetland she bought for my younger sister. She was ride & drive but she has issues...she's been known to kick & bite...she's not really suitable for a child & we feel would be more suited as a companion. Problem is how do we go about advertising Her without attracting the wrong people wanting a free horse...she is free as my mother doesn't feel she can charge for her with her issues, I understand what with more experienced owners she could change & be a lovely pony but at the minute she is not. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks 😊

I would advertise her warts and all and put at the bottom something along the lines of price to be discussed with potential owners. You have to charge something to make it a legal sale. You could ask for £50 say and donate it to charity, shows they are serious buyers but your mum wouldn't feel bad for taking money for her. Vet all potential homes as there is a big risk that she will just be past on or worse.

If she's ride and drive she's probably used to a lot harder work than being a child's pony. Could you look for a cheap cart and get her going yourselves? Or if driving doesn't interest you try putting her on a driving society website. (Just not the dreaded DD)

She came with a cart & she was ok at first but suddenly changed, she has had all the relevant checks teeth back ect so I'm not sure what changed. She was with her baby until she came to us so we thought at first it was just with them not being together anymore but now we don't have a clue.

I sent my pony to a skilled person who in turn carefully sourced a good home for him. I was totally out of pocket but more importantly the pony has a great new home where he has come on leaps and bounds and my conscience is clear.

Advertise her as Loan With a View to Buy - that way you won't get the idiots who will take anything if it is free. Do homechecks and set the price and period of the loan at the outset, it can be a nominal sum if you like but you will know they have seen her for what she is by then. Project Horses is a good site, the people looking on there will know they need to address some problems.

Or talk to a charity who could rehome her for you. If you offered to keep the pony until it is found a new home but pass the legal ownership to the charity, you can ensure the pony is not sold on and the charity would get a small rehoming fee.

You may have more luck advertising for a driving home. Someone looking to match a pair, for example, would have the experience to work with quirks, and would give the pony something to think about.

...or at least work him so hard he learns his job - something that they seem to thrive on.
