Hi guys, Right looking for a little help as I'm starting to stress out about my insurance and my horse.

My horse had been having issues working on his right rein and I got my vet to give him a check over. He said to get a physio out to check him over. She came out checked him over and said he was a little tense in his hips and did her stuff with him, but referred me back to my vet for further investigation.

Vet came back and did his checks and both physio and vet advised 4 weeks of walking work to strengthen up his hind quarters. 2 weeks in he started misbehaving again and I pushed him on for a further week before contacting my vet to say I was having issues. He came out and gave me danillion to see if it was a pain issue. At this point we talked about insurance incase it was going to need further investigation. The danillion proved without a shadow of a doubt that it has been a pain issue and my vet told me to contact the insurance company as he wants to do a scan and more investigation into the issue.

So I phoned insurance company and they sent a claim form to my vet. I have been stressing out because my vet told me 2 days after I contacted them that the insurance company did the most unusual thing and contacted him as soon as I came off the phone. He said that they never do that and it doesnt sound good so he thinks they may not cover him for this.

If they come back after the letter my vet has sent out which has the physio notes and stuff in and say there a problem where do I stand with this. Also what happens as I really cant afford to take on this vet bill as I now its going to be a big one and I'm paying off a big bill for a gut issue earlier in the year.

Can anyone shed any light on this or what options I may have. Sorry a big cuppa and cookie if you got this far. Sorry for wittling on, Just so stressed about everything.

What reason would they come up with not to pay out?...have you called them? Do you have any exclusions on your policy?...who are you insured with?

Call the company and ask what is going on?

which company is it by the way?

I imagine they may be hesitating because "behavioural" issues aren't covered, so they may be making sure that it isn't. But you've done the bute trial to prove it's pain so you should be ok.

As long as you are insured with a reputable company you shouldn't have a problem. There are however or two companies that have been mentioned previously that I hope you are not with.

If you are concerned it would be worth you phoning your insurance company to see what the situation is.

I am with NFU and have often phoned them after treatment has started to say that there is likely to be a claim and I have never had a problem with them.

I haven't heard of a company phoning a vet so soon - how did they have their number/

I cant think of any reason as to why they wouldnt pay out. But my vet says its very unsual for the insurance company to phone the vet so to look into other options as they may not pay out. My vet has just sent off the letter so we are waiting to find out what going on.

Its NFU my insurance is with.

Yeah exclusions on the policy are eye issues.

Never thought of the 'behaviour issue' thing so I'll bare that in mind.

just to warn you... NFU are taking 6 weeks to process claims at the moment!!!!

I'm with NFU and they have been brilliant and paid out every time.

Just reinforce it isn't a behavioural problem and he is def in pain!

I know someone who was with Petplan and they said they would only pay out if the scans came back with something wrong.... They were worried it was behavioural.

Don't panic, I wouldn't worry at all about this - it depends on the insurer, they may just have wanted to clarify some points. you sound like you have done everything by the book as it were so don't worry about it. If the vet had suggested scans it may well be they have contacted him to ask whether he feels this is necessary and what he think sit is likely to show etc etc.

Honestly, don't worry about it.
