Had a fab session in the school last night but the one thing that always lets us down is our halt transitions! I'll ask for halt from my seat and she'll come into a nice halt but as soon as I release my seat she'll walk on. If I try and hold the halt shes jigs on the spot (it feels like she's rocking backwards and forwards) and sometimes paw the ground if the halt is more than a few seconds. My instructor is coming next week but any advice would be good.

a difficult one, a quite well known dressage rider had the same problem and solved it by feeding mints to establish a proper halt. this worked but horse would try and turn his head expecting a mint when he was at a comp!!!!!! eventually she managed to do without mints....

It is a difficult one. Some would learn by rein back if they move forward. Mint idea is also a good one. You could initially give the mint immediately then take longer to give it. Make sure you always use a verbal reward at same time as mint. Then eventually word is enough

I was going to suggest treating as soon as you halt. Gradually extend the length of time you expect her to stand for.

Had the same problem with big lad. We did lots of halts in hand, hacking, schooling and even out on bridle ways. Each halt was rewarded with a polo and eventually no aid was given other than a whisper of 'whoa' or 'polo'.

Worked really well and the horse was 11 when we bought him. He went to medium and the top as a show horse where he stood for hours in the ring.
