advice needed, laid back pony

hi, have just bought a 3 year old, who is very laid back,,, but maybe just a little laid back. just started to break him, but a real struggle to get into trot, fine in field, occasionally seen cantering around. looks well, and is a joy to own. am i exprecting too much, used to nippier ponies. thanks any advice : :

I agree, if possible do some hacking and get him going forward before you start doing school work, once he is going forward you can start to add in a day of school work and build it up until you can do some more.
