Advice needed on backing 4 yr old

i realize its a strange thing to say, as i always carry a whip, but touching enough to get a response in a baby horse is a no no for me,because i never back until i am sure i can ride the horse from the leg straight away, and anything that might provoke an explosion or feelings of resentment in the horse is not in my mindset, it seems if you need a whip to make it move at that stage the horse is in a confused state.

i too hate whip resentful horses, and one of the first things i do is run the lunge whip all over them.

also if you touch a horse behind the saddle it can be very ticklish just there, as we know from grooming, sometimes i just touch a horse on the shoulder to say oiy wake up please.

most of our horses are high tb and are sensitive, very sensitive, so a tickle might be just as difficult for as a wallop.
