Advice needed on horses skin!

when grooming my horse ive noticed what i can only describe as dry patches of hairless skin around the top of his tail area ie. either side of the tail on his bum, there is no hair on these patches which are not huge, but big enough.
he does not seem to be rubbing as his tail is not rubbed, they ahve just appeared!
any thoughts??

havent changed his feed, or washed his rugs in anything so im baffled!
do you think putting some sort of cream on them will help?
i noticed a week ago, and they havent got any bigger, but neither has the hair grown back yet!
he is a 16.1hh, healthy up to weight TB, 6 yrs old.
 
I've recently had one of these appear on my mare's side, about the size of a new 5p coin. No lumps, bumps, soreness, dryness etc just no hair.

Not on pressure/rubbing point for rug. Any suggestions welcomed.
 
sounds the same thing as my boy, really baffled me!!! looks like its baffling everyone else too!
have asked on my yard but no one has a answer! they just say to put camarosa cream on it, to get the hair growing back, but would like to know whats caused it first.
dont really want to get the vet out, as he is fine in every other way.
 
Same here; my horse has something similar on his face and throat.

It hasn't spread much and is really only evident where his rug hasn't reached (he's got a full neck one on). He had the same last year and it disappeared with his new coat.

The vet was in the other day and he had look at it but couldn't diagnose it without a skin scrape. He said it could be a fungal infection but not necessarily Ringworm (don't panic).

He said keep an eye on it and only worry if it spreads.

due to the wet, but mild weather we had before the snow, it could be small patches of rain scald. horses can still get this under rugs. it is caused by the horse getting wet, either from rain or sweat, and then remaining damp for a while afterwards. if the horse is nice and warm it causes a nice, warm, moist enviroment, resulting in rainscald like areas. because they are small they can go un-noticed untill they heal over and the hair falls out, leaving a little scaley patch. the other option you might consider is ringworm. treeat it by washing the area in a medicated shampoo, and then apply some antiseptic cream. x
 
My old horse used to get bald patches when she lost her winter coat. It was like it fell out before the summer coat grew.
If the skin looks healthy I wouldn't worry too much
 
thanks all, i posted this in SY too, and someone suggested maybe he got too hot, i rugged him up too much and he rubbed, but for where the patches are i cant see how it would happen.
rain scald is sounding obvious now its been said. ill keep a eye on it, and if i get any other soloutions, ill post on here!

My horse is half clipped and where he is not clipped he has bald patches appearing around his flank (where the hair changes direction). The skin is perfectly pink and healthy and he isnt itchy.
I called my vet on Monday and they have suggested wiping the skin with hibiscrub and putting Corniscresent (Not sure how to spell it) on the skin to encourage the hair to grow back.
Obviously if it gets worse I will call the vet but he is 100% healthy in all other ways. xx
