We are looking into building a 60 x 40m arena ourselves and would really appreciate any information/guideance/help from anyone who has done this themselves.
Our neighbour is doing all of the groundwork for us, lazer levelling, moving of soil, drainage - arena will be next to a hedge with a ditch for drains to go into, and fencing,

We live near Shrewsbury in Shropshire, has anyone purchased silica sand locally from around here?? What sort of silica sand does it have to be - if there are different types??
Also, I am keen to have a wax surface to ride on, again, does anyone know of a good supplier?? and cost?? Or can you suggest other good surfaces that you use?

I have ridden on an indoor wax surface which is lovely, does anyone have an outdoor one, what do you think of it?? How deep is the surface?

All help greatfully received!! Thank you!!

Hi,

Not going to be much help with the self construction thing (a bit beyond me!!) but we have an outdoor waxed arena and it's great - doesn't get too deep when it's dry and not too dusty either.

Good luck with the build!

Can't remember how deep - though will see if I can find the paperwork as I know that had all the specs on it - how deep the hardcore was, what membrane was used etc.

We used Equestrian Surfaces as we had been told they were good with areas of poor drainage.

I've also ridden quite a bit on Martin Collins surfaces and they've been great as well.

make sure the groundworks are top spec and as many drains as you can afford! do shop around for silica sand, it varies immensley in price and quality. buy the best grade of silica sand you can afford as this is your lifetime base. then decide on top whether rubber, or shred etc etc! and get quotes/prices on haulage as this is a huge add on. but excellent drains and top end silica should see you through, then top up with rubber, waxed etc to suit you. once down remember to level frequently and most surface suppliers will recommend you NOT to lunge or loose school for a few months as this bites down on the surface. if done well it should ride well from day 1.
