It's important to gently remove the scabs first before applying a barrier layer - otherwise you trap the bacteria against the skin and they have a field day. And goose fat has no good properties beyond just being a barrier layer keeping mud from sticking to the hair. To treat the mud fever you will need to clean the legs and dry thoroughly then put on a soothing cream like sudocrem or udder cream which has antibacterial things in it too -If it's very sore it might be infected, if the horses legs swell or fill you would need antibiotics from the vet. Do search on here as endless posts about how people treat their mud fever successfully.
